Christmas holiday lights brighten up many residential, business, and public areas around Reno and Sparks, Nevada. It's a fun family activity to get out on a crisp evening and enjoy some of the colorful Christmas lights in the area. There are tree-lighting ceremonies and spectacular drive-through displays.
Reno Tree Lighting and Ice Skating
Each year, the city of Reno keeps their tree lit through the Christmas holiday season. Its traditional location is in downtown Reno at the corner of 1st and Virginia Streets, in the plaza between the Truckee River and City Hall. Hundreds of people fill the plaza to listen to holiday music and see the huge tree.
After the lighting ceremony, you can go ice skating. The Downtown Reno Ice Rink is located at Greater Nevada Field. Free parking is available across the street. In 2019, the tree lighting ceremony will start on December 12 at 5 p.m.
Sparks Hometowne Christmas Celebration
The city of Sparks offers its "Annual Hometowne Christmas Celebration" on December 6 and 7, 2019. The Sparks Community Christmas Tree is at Saint Mary's Amphitheater on Victorian Avenue, and there will be tree lighting ceremony.
The lighting ceremony takes place the evening before the Sparks Hometowne Christmas parade and celebration. In 2019, there will also be a special production of Winter Dreams, a variety show featuring comedians, magicians, aerial dancers, contortionists, some very talented animals, and more. The show is on at the Sierra Marketplace from December 6 to 22, 2019.
Local Shopping Center Displays
Need to go shopping for presents? Both Reno and Sparks offer festive shopping malls, so you'll have no problem finding something for everyone on your list.
The Outlets at Sparks will be fully decked out for the Christmas holidays. A big Christmas tree and outdoor decorations add to the displays you'll find in every store. You don't have to buy anything to enjoy the Christmas cheer. Besides the lights, there will be lots of holiday promotions and other activities.
The Summit Reno shopping center will also be all lit up for the holidays. The central plaza features a big Christmas tree set next to an outdoor fire pit to keep you warm. There are lights and decorations throughout this sprawling mall.
Hidden Valley Parade of Lights
For over 30 years, homeowners have featured Christmas light displays in the Hidden Valley neighborhood on the east side of Reno. This is actually a contest of the homeowners association, but the public is invited to come and enjoy the holiday lights.
There are numerous decorated homes, so look around if you are in this neighborhood. Take Pembroke Avenue east from E. McCarran Boulevard and go past Rosewood Lakes Golf Course to enter the neighborhood.
Carson City and Valley Christmas Lights
The State Christmas Tree in Carson City is decorated and the grounds of Nevada's state capitol are lit up for the holiday season with light displays. There are more lights to enjoy around Carson City as well. The official tree lighting ceremony takes place on December 6, 2019.
The annual Carson Valley Parade of Lights starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2019 and will parade along Highway 395 from Eddy Street to Minden Park.
Candy Cane Lane at the Carson Valley Inn is a drive-thru Christmas light display, open nightly starting December 7 and lasting until December 31. Candy Cane Lane features thousands of Christmas lights and a variety of scenes depicting traditional characters. Accompanying music can be heard by tuning your car radio to 89.9 FM.
