The hotel is like an oasis amid the unappealing surroundings. Staff are friendly and service is above average. Complimentary airport transfers are a welcome bonus. The hotel also has a great spa and health club for those who really feel like pampering themselves between flights. There are 101 guest rooms, including seven suites, and three restaurants. Expect to pay around 9,500 rupees per night upwards for a double room, including tax.

Hotel Southern Comfort is the standout option for anyone who wants to stay somewhere decent near Chennai airport but doesn't want to pay too much. This modern, mid-range hotel is newly constructed and situated super close to the airport on Grand Southern Trunk Road (closer than the Trident). The hotel's rooftop restaurant serves awesome Chettinad cuisine (the owner has been running one of Chennai's best Chettinad restaurants since the 90s). Other facilities include gym and wellness spa. Its location, about 10 minutes from the airport, is one of its most appealing features although it's situated down a side street off the main road. The rooms are a bit cramped but they're generally clean and attractive. Unfortunately, the hotel doesn't have a restaurant but there are some in the vicinity and a complimentary breakfast is served in the rooms. NGH Transit Hotel is located in a residential area about 10 minutes from Chennai airport. It's a newly renovated budget hotel with 27 rooms. The main drawback is that it's not central to any shops and doesn't have a restaurant or a lift. Free airport transfers are provided though. Similar to the Royal Chennai Residency, a complimentary breakfast (ordered from a local restaurant) is served in the rooms. Guests can also order meals. Rates start from about 2,700 rupees per night for a double, including tax. A family suite is available.

Pleasant Stay Guest House is a popular homestay with five rooms in a beautiful house at St. Thomas Mount, about 20 minutes from the airport. No doubt part of its appeal is its owner, who's an outstanding host and does everything possible for his guests. Although the guesthouse doesn't have a restaurant, it has arrangements with five hotels -- both vegetarian and non vegetarian -- that supply food. There's free wireless Internet. Room rates range from 1,500 rupees per night for a single to 3,800 rupees per night for an extra large double suite. A serviced apartment is also available for 3,700 rupees per night. Tax is additional.

This pocket-friendly guesthouse is situated behind the airport, about 15 minutes away. If you're looking for a cheap stay, it's possibly the best in its category. The accommodations are neat, clean and safe. The staff are very polite and helpful as well, including providing assistance with ticket bookings and travel arrangements. Food can be ordered in from local restaurants and you'll find menus in the lobby. There are 10 rooms. Rates start from about 1,300 rupees per night, including tax and breakfast.
