Cattlemen's has been around since 1910 if you can believe it. In 1945, it was won by Gene Wade on a dice bet, and the "hard 3's" he rolled have been branded on the wall ever since. It's known to most Oklahoma City residents as the place to go for a great steak and lamb fries, and it is one of several metro restaurants featured on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives."

Cattlemen's Steakhouse makes my list as one of the Top Restaurants Unique to OKC, and here's why.

An OKC Favorite

Before I go any further, I have to confess something. I have never tried, nor do I particularly wish to try, lamb fries. Cattlemen's, apparently, has some of the best around. They're considered to be a restaurant specialty, and your waiter will ask you if you'd like some as an appetizer. To each his own, of course, but I politely shake my head.

But not even considering that culinary treat, Cattlemen's Steakhouse is one of my favorite restaurants in the metro. Nicely flexible for casual dining or finer dining, Cattlemen's has some of the best steak around. There's much more to like than just that, though.

Walking in, you're quickly comforted by the wooden, deep brown decor. It's not a restaurant that requires formal wear; it's a dim hometown diner with a friendly staff and penciled drawings of cowboys of old upon the walls. Photos of Stockyard City's early days put you in a simpler time, without pretense and hungry for an Oklahoma steak.

Eat out front in the casual setting, in the slightly nicer leather booths of the back room. Whatever your choice, you're in for some good food.

Menu Delights

There are plenty of choices for a pre-meal drink or appetizer. The potato skins with bacon bits and sour cream are good, but make sure you save room.

Meals come with a salad (I recommend the creamy garlic-cheddar house dressing), choice of potato and a couple of mammoth, delicious dinner rolls.

The steak is the stuff at Cattlemen's, but there are other choices as well. Catfish, chicken, spaghetti, chicken-fried steak and a nice collection of sandwiches all range anywhere from $12-$30 or so.

However you prefer your steak prepared, the wait staff is intent on you getting it exactly as you want it. So don't be surprised if the server hangs around a moment while you check. I'm a medium man myself most of the time, and Cattlemen's steaks are always tender and delightfully flavorful.

One of the Best

Cattlemen's has been around for a long, long time. If you're new to the Oklahoma City area and like a great steak, this has to be on your list. If you've been around the metro for some time and haven't been, you should make the trip. It is wonderfully flexible for nearly any event, cozy lunch or intimate night out on the town.

Reasonably priced with a comfortable atmosphere, you won't find many with a negative thing to say about this place. The service is terrific and the food good enough to have you wanting to soon return. Cattlemen's Steakhouse
