No doubt one reason Cape Canaveral was chosen as America's center for space exploration is that it has some of the best weather in the country. The home to Kennedy Space Center and Visitor Complex, where thousands watched the space shuttles launch and now visit to explore space history, boasts moderate temperatures most of the year.

Cape Canaveral is also home to one of the busiest seaports in the world, Port Canaveral, where more than four million passengers embark on high-sea adventures annually. The Cape, as it is often referred to, is located along the Atlantic Coast of East Central Florida and has an overall average high temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low of 62.

Florida's weather can be unpredictable, however, on average Cape Canaveral's warmest month is August; January is the average coolest month, and the maximum average rainfall usually falls in September.

If you're wondering what to pack, follow your cruise line's suggestions for the time of year and itinerary. If you're visiting the Kennedy Space Center, bring along casual attire appropriate for the time of year. Always pack a bathing suit, though, because even if the water is too chilly to swim, sunbathing is a year-round sport in Florida.

Atlantic Hurricane Season

From June 1 through November 30, the Atlantic Hurricane Season brings the chance of tropical storms to the region. While landfall of devastating hurricanes is rare in Cape Canaveral, severe weather from fronts moving across Florida can cause weather delays and cancel cruise launches throughout the season. As a result, cruise ships may be diverted to different ports of call during the Atlantic hurricane season due to high seas, so be sure to check the forecast if you plan to depart from Cape Canaveral.

Winter in Cape Canaveral

Although it's the coolest season, winter in the Cape is one of the most popular times of the years for tourists to visit the Kennedy Space Center or depart for a tropical cruise to escape the colder weather in the northern United States. Low temperatures average about 50 degrees Fahrenheit throughout December, January, and February, and high averages stay around 72 degrees throughout the winter. Also considered one of the drier seasons of the year, you can expect rainfall less than a third of winter with a total average accumulation of a little over two inches each month.

What to Pack: Cool weather attire is recommended this time of year. Consider bringing a variety of pants, shorts, long and short-sleeved shirts, and a bathing suit as well as a light jacket for cooler winter evenings.

Average Temperatures and Rainfall by Month:

  • December: 67 F — Atlantic temperature of 74.2 F — 1.88 inches
  • January: 62 F — Atlantic temperature of 71.4 F — 1.91 inches
  • February: 63 F — Atlantic temperature of 71.5 F — 2.06 inches

Spring in Cape Canaveral

Perhaps one of the best times to visit Cape Canaveral, spring offers warm, dry weather for most of the season and relatively low crowd sizes and humidity. Temperatures range from an average low of 55 degrees Fahrenheit in March to an average high of 85 degrees in May—for a combined seasonal average temperature of 70 degrees. Additionally, although rainfall picks up in May, the rest of the season is relatively dry—especially March and April, which receive the least amount of rainfall per year, on average.

What to Pack: Although low humidity and mild temperatures make Cape Canaveral feel relatively warm throughout most of the season, you may want to bring a light jacket for nighttime chills in the early part of spring and an umbrella if you plan to visit in May.

Average Temperatures and Rainfall by Month:

  • March: 67 F — Atlantic temperature of 72.8 F — 1.53 inches
  • April: 72 F — Atlantic temperature of 75.8 F — 2.33 inches

Summer in Cape Canaveral

The busiest time of year, Cape Canaveral also experiences the warmest and wettest weather in summer. Cape Canaveral has a seasonal average temperature of 81 degrees Fahrenheit, average highs in the 90s, and average lows in the 70s. Additionally, with the arrival of hurricane season, each month also experiences upward of 14 days of rainfall accumulating over 15 inches of precipitation throughout the summer. Fortunately, summer showers typically don't linger longer than a few days, so you should still be able to enjoy the perfect beach weather—especially when the Atlantic Ocean is at its warmest temperature of 84.8 degrees Fahrenheit in August.

What to Pack: Bring your bathing suit, sandals, and beach towel, but also don't forget to pack waterproof shoes, a raincoat, and an umbrella to prepare for the tropical storms you might run into this time of year. Although average low temperatures don't drop below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, you may still want to bring a light jacket or sweater as many restaurants and venues in Cape Canaveral pump the air conditioning in the summer.

Fall in Cape Canaveral

As temperatures and the number of rainfall days drop throughout the season, so do the sizes of tourist crowds that visit Cape Canaveral. Fall temperatures range from average highs of 88 degrees Fahrenheit in September down to average lows of 60 degrees in November. Although the Atlantic Hurricane Season lasts through November, the likelihood of a tropical storm weakens in October and November; however, September is the rainiest month of the year and gets nearly seven inches of precipitation over the course of 14 days, on average, each year.

What to Pack: A raincoat, umbrella, and waterproof shoes are necessary in the early part of the season, and you may want to pack an extra pullover layer of clothing for the nighttime lows later in the fall.
