Cancer patients, their families and others affected by cancer are invited to reserve their free rooms for the 17th annual Stowe Weekend of Hope, May 5-7, 2017.
Why are Stowe lodging establishments giving away hundreds of free hotel rooms?
A press release announcing the inaugural Weekend of Hope stated: "It's a fact that one in three people alive in the United States today will be affected by cancer in some way.
The Stowe Weekend of Hope will help combat this dread disease by both educating and inspiring those most directly affected." Seventeen years later, the Stowe Weekend of Hope continues to provide an inspiring and educational retreat for hundreds of patients and survivors coping with the physical, emotional, spiritual and financial challenges of cancer.
Please help spread the word if you know someone whose life has been touched by cancer. My late mother attended the Stowe Weekend of Hope years ago with my dad, and she took such comfort from meeting other patients with the same diagnosis. This beautifully run program is generously supported each year by Stowe's lodging properties and other businesses.
Participants have access to a variety of educational and recreational programs throughout the weekend. The Stowe Weekend of Hope features presentations by some of New England's leading oncologists and medical researchers, held at a variety of locations throughout the resort town.
Presentation topics will cover both traditional and non-traditional cancer treatments and prevention strategies. This year's Weekend of Hope will also feature Reiki sessions, a hula hooping class, yoga, a fundraising dance party with DJVU ($5 for registered participants), Stowe at Night guided lantern tours, a survivors' victory hike with prayer flags and opportunities to network with other patients.
Most events are free; meals are not included.
On Saturday evening, a candlelight interfaith service for remembrance and hope will be held. More details about the weekend's schedule of events are available at the Stowe Weekend of Hope Web site.
Free accommodations at more than a dozen participating Stowe lodges, inns and hotels will be provided for Friday and Saturday nights to people who have or have had cancer and their families. Only first-time Weekend of Hope attendees are eligible for free rooms and registration. A $50 lodging deposit is required to hold your free room. At the completion of the event, this deposit will be refunded, or you may opt instead to donate the fee to the Stowe Weekend of Hope. Discounted rooms are available for returning guests, who are also charged a $30 registration fee. To request a free room or lodging assistance, complete the online registration form. Interested cancer patients and survivors should request reservations as soon as possible, as rooms are limited. For more information about Stowe, call toll free, 802-387-0379.
