California Fishing Licenses Required to Fish in the Los Angeles Area

Requirements and Prices

The following is a list of fishing permits available in Los Angeles and all of Southern California. Fishing permits are not required if you are under 16 years old or fishing from a public pier like the Santa Monica Pier. License fees are also waived on Free Fishing Days. Here's a list of where you can buy a fishing license in Los Angeles County.

As of January 2017, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) will no longer accept cash at CDFW’s License and Revenue Branch and regional license counters.

Sport Fishing Licenses

Sport fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 years old or older to take fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians or reptile in inland or ocean waters (except on public piers).

Annual Licenses (valid through December 31 of the current year)

Resident: $47.01
Nonresident: $126.62
Duplicate: $10.54

Short Term Licenses

1-Day Resident/Nonresident: $15.12
2-Day Resident/Nonresident: $23.50 (2 consecutive days)
10-Day Nonresident: $47.01 (10 consecutive days)

Validation Stamps and Report Cards

The following Stamps and Cards may also be required in certain areas of Southern California. For Northern California requirements visit the CA Department of Fish and Game. Report cards are required for taking the specified items including for persons who are not required to have a sport fishing license, such as persons who are under 16 years of age, persons who are fishing from a public pier and persons who are fishing on free fishing days.



Second Rod Stamp: $14.61
Allows an angler to fish with two rods or lines in inland lakes, reservoirs and the Colorado River District.

Ocean Enhancement Stamp: $5.14
Allows an angler to fish in ocean waters south of Point Arguello (Santa Barbara County). An Ocean Enhancement Stamp is not required when fishing under the authority of a One or Two-Day Sport Fishing License.

Additional fee for duplicate stamp or report card, even if the original is free.

Steelhead Report Card: $7.05
Allows an angler to fish for steelhead in inland waters.

Spiny Lobster Report Card: $9.46
Required for all anglers taking spiny lobster.

Sturgeon Fishing Report Card: $8.13
Required for all anglers taking sturgeon.

Abalone Fishing Report Card: $22.42
Required for all anglers taking abalone.

You can buy a fishing license online at www.wildlife.ca.gov/licensing/Online-Sales. Online purchases require 15 days for delivery, so don't order online if you need your permit sooner than 15 days. Discounts on Fishing Permits

Discounts on annual licenses are available for disabled veterans, recovering service members, low-income seniors, low-income Native Americans, mobility impaired, blind or developmentally disabled. discount fishing permits are only available at:
