Chilled, milky perfection with sweet, gummy tapioca balls that slide over your tastebuds after being sucked through a huge vacuum-like straw. Sigh. With wild flavors like Matcha green tea, lychee, taro, honeydew, passion fruit, and dozens more, Bubble Tea is the dessert/drink/snack of your dreams. We've rounded up the best in North Jersey.
While the bubble tea is surely the star of the show here at Babo, with dozens of flavors, a handful of "sinker" options, and customizable sugar levels, this teahouse has much more to offer.
Gelato, chicken and waffles, pork buns, ramen, mac and cheese wedges, and an entire WALL of toy vending machines (yes, like the ones at the supermarket that your four-year-old self would beg your parents to fill with quarters, only to produce the weirdest tchotchkes around) will keep you coming back again and again. 102 Walnut Street, Montclair
ViVi Bubble Tea
The New Jersey outpost of this New York City-based franchise serves up highly authentic Taiwanese tea and snacks. The "special" tea concoctions are worth a try, especially the Chocoberry and Cookie, and the Tiramisu milk tea is dessert in a cup. You mustn't leave without noshing on a couple of Taiwanese BBQ Sausages (on a stick!) and Spicy Popcorn Chicken. Yum. 117 Washington St., Hoboken
You'll find Rutgers Newark or NJIT students studying (or taking a break!) at this chill café. Play some board games, chill out on the back patio, and sip on one of the many Bubble Tea options.
On Greek Mondays, students can wear their letters to receive 2 Bubble Teas for $5. On Fridays, the rest of us can get the same deal for two large teas. For the coffee-lovers, a bottomless coffee for dine-in patrons will run you only $3. 5 Sussex Ave., Newark
The Big Straw
This spot provides a modern take on Bubble Tea, with truly unique concoctions on the menu like a Pina Telada (Pineapple Oolong Tea, Coconut Milk Tea Smoothie) and Pumpkin Chai Milk Tea (Pumpkin Puree, Vanilla Chai Milk Tea, Agave Honey). Yogurt Popping Boba and Grass Jelly are only some of the sort-of-strange, yet amazing items on the tppings list. 276 1st St., Jersey City
Certain menu items are shrouded in mystery at this relatively new South Orange spot: white fungus topped Ice Stick Rice, anyone? We like the informational snark on the website, too, explaining that "Boba"—a nickname for the tapioca balls that are often included in the drink—is slang for "large breasts". Try the Magic Mocha Bubble Tea and a crepe topped with green tea ice cream, while you're at it. 15 Village Plaza SF1, South Orange
