Campground: Blythe Island Regional Park Campground
Location: Brunswick, Georgia
Last visit: December, 2012 How camped: RV How found: Internet, Google search
Camping sites are wide and many are pull thru; can accommodate very large motorhomes and fifth wheels (ours is a 19 foot trailer). Each site has a small concrete pad that serves as a patio and picnic table. Sites are separated by wooded area giving each site reasonable privacy. All sites have full hookups, as well as cable TV and wi-fi. The campground is part of larger park, with two lakes and several small canals. It is a heavily wooded overall adjacent to a salt marsh. There are plenty of hiking and off-road biking trails for exercise. The park also has an excellent boat launch and fishing pier on the salt marsh. The park offers kayaks and john boats for rent (it was too cold/windy while we were there).
Pros, Cons, Attractions and Additional Comments
Pros: Location, opportunities to hike, fish and tour nearby historic sites. Convenient to St Simons and Jekyll Islands. Newly renovated bathhouse.
Cons: Some intermittent TV/wifi issues. Smells from nearby paper mill could be a problem if wind is blowing wrong direction. During warmer months, sand gnats and mosquitoes can be bad.
From the park it is a quick drive to Brunswick for shopping and restaurants. Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site - 15 mile drive, one of Georgia's State Parks. Prior to the Civil War slaves worked the plantation rice fields and it remained a rice plantation until the 1910s when it became a dairy farm. Five generations of the same family owned the plantation until It was donated to Georgia in the 1970s. Not to be missed is a tour of the family house with incredible period furnishings. St Simons Island - 10 mile drive, includes beaches and Fort Frederica, a US National Monument. The Fort played a significant role pre-US revolution south in that it served to define the area as part of the British colonies as the British and Spanish fought over territory. Jekyll Island - 15 miles - did not visit this trip, maybe next time; similar to St Simons.
