'Black Friday' Marks Start Of Holiday Shopping Season

Some of the most organized people you know might have their Christmas shopping done by Halloween, but for most, Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, represents the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Once Thanksgiving is over, it's easy to get into the spirit of the winter gift-giving holidays.

A lot of shopping is now done online, and that's always open. But for the true Black Friday holiday shopping kick-off, Salt Lake City-area merchants are open for extended hours on Nov. 24, Black Friday 2017. Look for special events, giveaways, and entertainment at some locations to add an extra festive air to your holiday shopping experience.

    City Creek Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Black Friday. Shoppers can enjoy the mall's holiday decorations and fountain shows and get photos taken with Santa. City Creek offers a "virtual line" for Santa photos, so shoppers can register for a turn to take a photo, then enjoy shopping while waiting for a text message notification when it's time to take the photo. Some City Creek stores have extended hours for Black Friday; check individual store websites for more information.

    Tired of navigating midnight crowds Thanksgiving night, dazed from tryptophan, knowing you're going home to a sink full of dirty dishes? When downtown is your destination for Black Friday, stop by Caffe Niche for a Black Friday brunch from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Prices are a la carte, and no reservations are required. It's a delicious and peaceful break from this biggest-of-all shopping days.

    Tons of holiday shopping for electronics and toys gets done at discount stores like Walmart, Kmart, and Target or at specialty stores like Best Buy and Toys R Us. Many stores, such as Target, open as early as 6 p.m on Thanksgiving; Target will stay open until midnight and then reopen at 6 a.m. on Black Friday in 2017. Toys R Us will open at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving and stay open for 30 hours straight. Check the websites of the stores on your shopping agenda before heading out for Black Friday hours.

    Fashion Place Mall will be open for extended hours on Black Friday. Check the website before you head out for both mall hours and possibly different hours at some stores.

    Tanger Outlets in Park City opens at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving night and stays open until 10 p.m. Black Friday night. Check out the deals for each store, updated daily. There will be sales throughout the entire Thanksgiving weekend at Tanger.

    Check The Gateway's website for its hours on Black Friday, along with a listing of Black Friday specials at Gateway stores.

    The Outlets at Traverse Mountain will open at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving night and stay open for 24 hours, until 9 p.m. on Black Friday, Nov. 24. Check the website for Santa hours and special store offers.  If you spend $150 or more at the mall, you will be gifted with a free roll of wrapping paper. Go to the mall's Customer Service desk to pick it up.

    Make your way to the Shops at South Town after you check its website for its hours on Black Friday for great deals on all the presents on your list. The mall is the scene of a Harry Potter Christmas in a Wizarding World, in the mall from Nov. 9, 2017, to Jan. 31, 2018. It will remind you of winter in a Hogsmeade village, complete with shop window displays and ways to interact. And there will be wands, lots of wands.
