When it comes to old-fashioned glamour and glitz in Miami, the Biltmore Hotel certainly stands heads and shoulders above the rest as a Miami luxury hotel. Built in the 1920s in the luxurious surroundings of Coral Gables, the Biltmore Hotel is famous for retaining much of its old pre-Depression glamour. Don’t be surprised if you’re served your four-course meal by waiters in white gloves, or end up putting next to your favorite celebrity at the Biltmore’s famous 18-hole championship golf course.

The History of the Biltmore Hotel

Developed in the 1920s as part of George Merrick’s overall vision for Coral Gables, the Biltmore Hotel was built by Merrick and John McEntee Bowman, one of the period’s most prominent architects. The Biltmore Hotel encapsulated everything about the 1920s; it was luxurious, opulent and designed specifically to cater to the rich and famous who were flocking to enjoy the sights and sins of Miami. Of note, Bowman also designed Miami’s famous Freedom Tower.

The Biltmore struggled when the Great Depression hit, but it quickly resumed its place at the accommodation of choice by hosting a number of synchronized swimming events, which was the latest sports craze in the 1930s and 40s. Dozens of Hollywood and European elite flocked to the Biltmore to see the bathing beauties, including Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, the Roosevelts, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and even Al Capone.

Haunted Biltmore?

The Biltmore Hotel is also regarded as a prime haunted hotel; in fact, due to its temporary history as a hospital in WWII, it’s rumored that the ghosts of many soldiers wander the hallways. Additionally, a notorious gangster was shot on the 13th floor, resulting in many guests claiming that they’ve seen a man in a 1920s suit roaming the hallway.

Dining at the Biltmore

In 1996, the Biltmore Hotel was made into a National Historic Landmark, and in 2009, the hotel opened its very own Culinary School. It’s also the home of one of the best brunches in Miami.
