Bethpage Black Golf Course in the New York State Parks

Bethpage Black Golf Course
New York State Parks

No listing of New York golf courses would be complete without the inclusion of the Bethpage Black Golf Course, New York State Park Golf Courses Complex. This amazing facility in Farmingdale, the largest of its kind in the world, features five 18-hole golf courses, including the world famous "Black" Course, designed by A W Tillinghast. Now there's a name to stir the imagination.

Bethpage once was part of the Yoakum family estate. They leased the property to the Lenox Hills Corporation and thus the Lenox Hills Country Club was born. In the early 1930s, Lenox Hills was acquired by the Bethpage Park Authority and it became the nucleus of Bethpage State Park. Work three new golf courses (Black, Red, and Blue) began almost immediately, and the one-time Lenox Hills Course was redesigned and re-designated the "Green Course." One has to wonder who put forward A.W. Tillinghast's name to be the architect of all that work; whoever it was, it was a masterstroke. If you've never played a Tillinghast course, you're in for a rare treat. The Yellow Course, designed by Alfred Tull, was added in 1958. The Black course plays 7,065 yards from the Blue tees for a par of 71. The course rating is 75.4 and the slope is 144.

Green Fees: 18 holes - the daily rate is $78-$130 depending upon the time of day, the weekend rate is $90-$150. Cart $34.

Tee Times:

  • You can call ahead and reserve a tee time, but you'll need to plan months ahead. Call the number below for information.
  • Or you can do it fun way: Arrive at Bethpage during the afternoon of the day before you'd like to play and park your car in one of the numbered "overnight" parking spaces and then sit inside, or stay close to it. Sometime between 6 and 7 pm, a Bethpage official will come around and hand out wristbands, one per car, this confirms the order in which tickets will be handed out the following morning. These tickets are handed out between 4-4:30 am, and it's those tickets that allow you to purchase your round of golf. This, of course, means you'll need to stay at a hotel nearby. I recommend the Courtyard Republic Airport Long Island/Farmingdale, Farmingdale, NY, It's less than two miles away. Whew, and the best of luck to one and all.
