Although the COVID-19 pandemic made vaccination cards a hot topic, if you’re an avid traveler, you’re no stranger to immunization records. They can provide proof of protection against everything from typhoid to yellow fever—the type of vaccinations required or recommended for travel to Asia, Africa, and countries throughout Central and South America. Vaccine card holders keep these essential records protected when you're on the go and allow for changes to be made in the event of booster shots or additional vaccines.

Dr. Jeff Pilz, pharmacy manager at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, observes that proof of vaccination may be necessary for travel as the COVID-19 pandemic subsides. “As some businesses, cruise lines, and large gatherings begin to resume operations, there may be situations where proof of full vaccination is required. If unable to use an electronic vaccine database or a picture of your vaccine card, having your physical card is a must,” he says. “Added protection from card holders could really help while traveling, especially considering the CDC card size of 4 x 3 inches may not always fit the best in wallets or purses designed for smaller government IDs, credit cards, and debit cards.”

What to Look for in a Vaccine Card Holder

Size

The official Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID-19 vaccination card is 4 x 3 inches, slightly larger than customary CDC cards. Many other vaccination cards measure in a similar size. They are larger than traditional debit and credit cards, so wallets with card slots won’t fit the vaccination card without bending it. It’s always wise to measure your card before ordering to ensure a proper fit.

Material

While material is a personal choice, you may want to opt for a card case that incorporates plastic to protect your card against smearing and liquids.

Price

The price of vaccination card holders begins around a few dollars per piece and can soar to more than $100. Price variations depend largely on material and style. Think about how often you'll be traveling with a vaccination card and make a decision based on cost per use.

FAQs

Should you carry your card with you everywhere?

No, says Dr. Jeff Pilz, pharmacy manager at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “If not needed for travel or attendance, it is best to leave your vaccine card at home or someplace secure with other official documents, like a safe deposit box. A photo of the front of the vaccine card can be kept on your smartphone for backup.”

Should you laminate your card?

Dr. Pilz says card lamination has become controversial following the COVID-19 vaccine. “The heat may damage certain types of printed labels if used in lieu of handwritten information by the vaccine site. There is also the unknown as for the future need for booster shots, which may require documentation of additional doses,” he says. “If you already laminated your card, don’t fret. Just as the need for booster shots is yet to be determined, the use of the same vaccine cards for future dose documentation has not been finalized.” Vaccine card holders protect your card while allowing for future changes in the event of boosters or additional immunizations.

What should you do if you lose your card?

In many cases, your vaccination card is as important as the immunization itself. If you lose your card or record of vaccination, check with the clinic, pharmacy, or hospital where you received your shot. They should have a record of your vaccination and might be able to make you a copy.
