Products We Tested

How We Tested

We bought three top-rated travel adapters and our reviewers tested them for six hours. We asked our testers to consider the most important features when using these travel adapters, from their price to their number of USB ports. We’ve outlined the key takeaways here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.

What to Look for in a Travel Adapter

Your destination When buying an adapter, think about where you’re traveling. If you want to cut down on bulk, go for a streamlined converter, though it might only work in some regions. On the other hand, universal adapters will be effective no matter where you wind up — so if you’re a frequent jetsetter, this might be the best option.

USB ports Newer converters now come with USB ports, which eliminates the need for the USB-to-outlet converter for charging tablets and phones. In most cases, this means that you can charge more than one device at the time, which is handy for families — everyone’s gadgets definitely add up on the road! — or those traveling with multiple devices.

Price Forking over a ton of money for a converter that you’ll only use once a year doesn’t make sense, so go for a price that correlates with how often you travel. (That being said, it’s almost always cheaper to buy one before you leave for vacation rather than on the ground.)

What We Like

  • Great value

  • Many ports

  • Light and compact

What We Don't Like

  • Only one main plug port

  • Charging takes a bit of time

“This is a great basic travel adapter with everything you’d need — and at a great price,” declared one of our testers. One reviewer also loved that it was “light and compact” and that it had many ports: “There was even a spot for my Macbook,” she said, “which stood out among other adapters.” However, one of our testers wished that there was “more than one main plug port.” She also noted that “USB ports are generally less powerful than the plug ports, so charging does take a bit more time.”

What We Don't Like

  • Big

What We Like

  • Compact

  • Sturdy shape

  • Silent

What We Don't Like

  • No USB ports

  • Sliders between plugs fragile

This travel adapter was a hit with one of our testers because it was very portable: “It’s very compact,” she said. “I can see it fitting anywhere pretty easily. The also cube shape feels very sturdy when it's plugged in.” Another plus? It was silent when charging, according to our reviewers. In terms of negatives, one tester thought it was a “bummer” that there weren’t any USB ports and also noted that one of its design features wasn’t as durable: “The sliders that you use to choose your plug type tend to get stuck,” she explained. “I could see myself easily breaking one of those if I pushed it too hard.”
