Georgia's greatest spas are on the water -- one on an island and one on a gorgeous lake. They are luxury resorts that are part of private communities, so they are big and lavish. And if someone in your life likes golf, Georgia is your place.

The Spa and Fitness Center at Sea Island, Sea Island, Georgia

This private barrier island off the southeastern coast of Georgia is one for spa-lovers to put on their bucket list.

Surrounded by five miles of private, pristine beach on the Atlantic Ocean to the east and separated from St. Simons Island on the west by the largest salt marsh on the eastern seaboard, Sea Island became a major destination in 1928 when the historic Mediterranean-style masterpiece known as The Cloister was built. Restored and expanded in 2003, The Cloister has 175 elegant rooms and suites with sweeping views of the Black Banks River and the Atlantic Ocean.

The 65,000 square-foot Spa at Sea Island features tiered fountains, a manicured labyrinth and the Garden Atrium, a picturesque, tree-filled plaza with inviting chaise lounges that encourages use before or after treatments. Its 23 treatment rooms include "Together Suites" for couples or friends and Private Suite Spas with big Victorian bathing tubs, a balcony and comfortable furniture to enjoy a healthy lunch or snack from the wellness menu.

The spa’s on-site Nutritionist Joyce Mattox works with Sea Island’s chefs to create a specially-designed menu to promote nutrition and wellness.

Along with its extensive array of spa treatments, The Spa and Fitness Center at Sea Island is the first American resort to add whole body cryotherapy (WBC), a popular sports recovery technique used in Europe and by professional athletes and A-list celebrities.

Sea Island’s extensive sporting life includes three 18-hole world-class golf courses, tennis on sixteen Har-Tru clay courts, paddleboarding, salt marsh kayaking and trap and skeet shooting, all available with expert help. Golfers may want to stay in the 40-room The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club or rent one of 150 private cottages with anywhere from three to eight bedrooms.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa, The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, Greensboro, Georgia

Just 75 miles from Atlanta is one of the South's most opulent contemporary resorts, set on beautiful Lake Oconee. This relaxed country house with 251 rooms is oriented towards golf (there are 117 holes within the Reynolds Plantation private community!) tennis and boating, with 30 acres of picturesque waterfront acres. The 27,000 square foot spa caters to men with a 24-hour access fitness center and The Gents' Place, a private room with a classic men’s barber chair. Shaves are done with old-fashioned steel razors, and you can enjoy a complimentary tasting of the resort’s exclusive, small-batch Woodford Reserve Bourbon during any 50- or 80-minute service, mostly named for whiskies.

Other services include shoe shines, mustache trims, haircuts and nail grooming. The room also features a large, flat-screen television set to the sports game or program of the current patron’s preference.
