The Best Attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

When it first debuted at Walt Disney World in Florida, Disney’s Hollywood Studios was smaller than the Magic Kingdom and Epcot and offered considerably fewer attractions than its sister parks. The theme park, opened as a working studio, was meant to celebrate Hollywood history and the heritage of Tinseltown films while taking visitors behind the creative process.

As Disney’s Hollywood Studios has evolved through the years, it has expanded and added more attractions. It has also shifted its focus from showing how films are made to inviting visitors to enter their mythical worlds. The addition of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land, especially, has upped the ante at the theme park and introduced some stunning attractions.

Let’s run down the top 10 rides at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, starting with the very best. Note that each attraction includes a 10-point thrill rating, with 1 being mild and 10 being extreme.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

This just may be the best theme park attraction in the world (although Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure at Shanghai Disneyland is right up there as well), let alone at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Lasting about 17 minutes, presented in four acts, and incorporating three different ride systems, it is wildly ambitious, highly sophisticated, and epic in scale. You’ll feel as if you have truly entered a "Star Wars" movie and become a central character.

Note that Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is so popular, you may want to consider purchasing individual Lightning Lane passes to guarantee entry and to reduce your wait time. This is especially recommended if you will be visiting Disney World during a high-traffic time of year.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

This E-Ticket attraction is as immersive as it is clever. It’s essentially a thrill ride (with plenty of thrills), but its theme and story are quite captivating and evocative as well. You’ll enter a haunted hotel as part of an episode of "The Twilight Zone" television series, and you’ll experience the ride of your life. The Tower of Terror is loaded with G-forces and physical sensations as well as more subtle psychological thrills.

Pre-dating Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Star Tours (which originally debuted at Disneyland) was one of the industry’s first motion simulator attractions. It was retooled in 2011 and now features even more immersive, high-definition media and a random sequence generator that means you never know where in the galaxy you might be heading. It is a giddy romp through the world of the classic, beloved sci-fi films.

The next generation of motion simulator attractions, Smuggler’s Run puts you in the cockpit of the famous Millennium Falcon and lets you control the adventure. You’ll either be a pilot, gunner, or an engineer (but if you are lucky, you'll get one of the two coveted pilot positions), and you’ll be on a mission at the behest of dubious space pirate, Hondo Ohnaka. Find your inner Wookiee (or Han Solo) and blast into hyperspace.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Believe it or not, Mickey Mouse never had his own ride at a Disney park–until Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway opened in 2020. Housed in the Studios’ centerpiece Chinese Theater, the attraction uses trackless vehicles, projection mapping in enormous rooms within the show building, animatronics, practical sets, and other theme park trickery to take guests into the zany world of a Mickey Mouse short. Be prepared to experience cartoon laws of physics and logic (in other words, there are no laws) aboard the runaway railcars on the delightful attraction.

Toy Story Mania

It’s not really a ride so much as a life-size, highly immersive video game experience. Passengers move from giant screen to giant screen and play Toy Story-themed carnival games by blasting away at 3D virtual targets. The “spring-action shooters” work quite well, and the gameplay experience is very intuitive. You’ll have a blast as you try to rack up the most points.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith

Along with The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (which is located nearby), Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is among the most thrilling rides at Disney World. The launched coaster explodes out of the station, revving up from 0 to 57 mph in 2.8 seconds. It also includes inversions that toss passengers upside down. It’s no wonder dudes scream like a lady aboard the Aerosmith-themed ride.

Slinky Dog Dash

It’s a launched coaster–with two launches no less–but this charming and well-themed family coaster is gentle enough for most kids (and wary adults) to handle. Yet it’s exhilarating enough to provide satisfying, if tempered, thrills. As the centerpiece of Toy Story Land, wait times can get a bit long for Slinky Dog Dash. If you will be visiting during a busy time of the year, consider using the extra-fee Disney Genie+ to reserve a ride time.

Fantasmic!

Fantasmic!, the nightly show presented in its own dedicated outdoor theater, is a tour-de-force presentation that is certainly one of the highlights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It features clips from classic Disney animated films projected onto enormous water screens. It weaves a story of good vs. evil (one guess which side of the equation Mickey Mouse falls on) and incorporates magnificent fountains, pyrotechnics, barges that serve as floating stages, enormous sets, live performers, and wild effects.

Muppet*Vision 3D

Likewise, Muppet*Vision 3D is not a ride-through attraction. The funny and engaging theater show features the Muppets’ trademark humor and pokes fun at pretty much everything, including the entire genre of 3D movies. In addition to the film, there are some in-theater animatronics and effects. (Look for inveterate hecklers Statler and Hilton in the balcony.) The finale with Sam Eagle, which figuratively and literally bombs, is hilarious.
