Nahil Mayab translates to “House of the Maya,” and this garden restaurant is a must-stop for anyone in Orange Walk looking to experience classic Mayan and Mestizo cuisine. Some of the favorite dishes include smoked pork or chicken salpicón, which is a sort of chopped hash that’s a local specialty; anafres, which is known as Mestizo fondue and made with mashed beans, shredded pork, and gooey cheese and served with homemade tortillas; coconut rice and beans served with stewed chicken and fried plantain; and their take on Irish stew: Beef and Belikin Stout Stew. Started by the Arceo-Eiley family in the early 2000s, El Fogon still uses a fire pit and wood-fired stove to cook everything from stews to game meats to lobster. This restaurant inside Parrot Cove Lodge in Hopkins Village is one of the few fine dining experiences in Belize. Chef Rob, who’s originally from the Netherlands, has worked in restaurants in Switzerland, Australia, and London before moving to the Caribbean and then Belize in 1999. Chef Rob’s four-course or a la carte locally sourced menu changes frequently, depending on what he can get his hands on. His dishes are inspired by Maya, Garifuna, and Asian cuisines, and may include beef carpaccio, fresh fish cooked with ginger, coconut, and lemongrass, and hibiscus marinated pork tenderloin with cranberry and balsamic sauce. This is one of the few restaurants in Belize where reservations are recommended.

This restaurant in downtown San Ignacio is by the same owners of the lauded Lodge at Chaa Creek. There’s outdoor seating that overlooks a park and the menu makes use of organic fruits and vegetables that come from their 32-acre Maya farm in the Macal River valley.
