Best Overall: Now Amber Puerto Vallarta
A beachfront hotel amid the shops and restaurants of downtown Puerto Vallarta, Now Amber Puerto Vallarta is an upscale, all-inclusive option in town. There are numerous pools scattered around the property, including beachfront pools with in-pool sun loungers, whirlpool spas, and one pool with a fun waterslide. Separate kid's and teen’s clubs have a variety of age-appropriate games and activities, while adults can take advantage of complimentary green fees at the nearby Marina Vallarta Golf Club. Other activities can also be arranged through the hotel including kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving. A seasonal baby turtle release program gives children and adults the opportunity to help these endangered sea creatures.
The property has received many awards and certificates for environmental sustainability, most notably from the Rainforest Alliance. A selection of guest rooms and suites include swim-up options and ones with private plunge pools or Jacuzzi tubs. Guests can dine at international buffets, casual grills, and Italian, Asian, and Mexican restaurants, and nightly entertainment showcases Mexican culture, break dancing, and fire breathing. The on-site Casino 52 allows guests to try their luck at slot machines, electronic Roulette and Blackjack, and to bet on various sporting events.
Best for Nature: Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa
Set within 85 acres of lush tropical jungle and tranquil beaches, the Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa offers a secluded retreat in nature with an emphasis on exploration and appreciation. Hotel guides lead groups on hikes to rivers with picturesque swimming holes and hidden waterfalls, as well as to look for the many bird species living in the area. Children can go on mini hikes, plant trees, and take nature photography classes, along with more conventional activities such as face painting, sandcastle competitions, and various arts and crafts. Along with snorkeling and kayaking, water activities include paddleboard lessons and guided kayak tours through rock tunnels at Los Arcos.
Guests can also enjoy treatments such as green tea and seaweed body wraps and hot river stone massages at the spa, swim in the infinity pool and relax in the outdoor Jacuzzi tubs, or play a game of tennis or squash. Blanca Blue prepares gourmet contemporary Mexican cuisine, Boca Dosstk serves high quality grilled meat dishes paired with premium wines and handcrafted cocktails, and Aquazul is a relaxed beach bar for light bites and 360-degree views of the beach, pools, and ocean.
Best Boutique: Club Ocho Cascadas
Built into a steep hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Club Ocho Cascadas is a small, but beautiful boutique hotel. With nine private suites designed in a Greek and Balinese island-style, the hotel gets its name from the plunge pools, including one in each private suite that cascade into each other to form a series of waterfalls. All the villas have large master bedrooms featuring artisan-designed furnishings, spacious bathrooms lined with tiles and natural river stones, and a kitchen area. However, the true highlights are the massive balconies, lined with marble floors and furnished with daybeds, lounge sets, and outdoor dining tables.
On top of the property, the two-level penthouse offers three pools and a separate Jacuzzi tub with an adjoining bar, a fireplace in the master bedroom, and a private chef. Its two scenic terraces offer the best views on the property. The hotel also provides an extensive menu of healthy breakfasts, dinners, and light meals, and in-room spa services include Swedish, Thai and hot stone massages, facials, and manicures/pedicures.
Best for Families: Velas Vallarta
Surrounded by a beautiful stretch of golden beach, Vela Vallarta is located in a relaxed area of luxury resorts. Its pool complex is one of the finest in Puerto Vallarta, consisting of three pools, including a dedicated kids’ pool connected by a waterway with cascades, waterfalls, fountains, and landscaped tropical gardens. The kids’ club has board and video games and seasonal activities such as Easter egg hunts, summer beach bonfires, and Christmas arts and crafts. There are game courts for tennis, with clinics available for adults and children, and basketball, beach volleyball, and soccer. More relaxed activities include yoga and dance classes.
Families can make use of services including babysitting, laundry and dry cleaning, daily pool activities, and nightly entertainment shows. Parents can relax with a massage or sauna treatment at the spa, which offers beachfront and overwater treatment cabanas, and golfers can take a shuttle service to the Marina Vallarta golf course. Guest accommodations include two- and three-bedroom suites with space for up to eight guests. Several restaurants include family-friendly grills and Mexican eateries, with snack and ice cream stations providing hamburgers, nachos, and sundaes throughout the day.

Best for Couples: Casa Velas
An all-inclusive, adults-only boutique resort, Casa Velas is a relaxed and intimate hotel built in a hacienda-style with lawns, ornamental ponds, and flowerbeds throughout. Suites have contemporary furnishings and, depending on the suite chosen, guests may have access to private immersion pools, marble Jacuzzi tubs in the bathroom, and views of the grounds or the surrounding Marina Vallarta Golf Course.
With a sauna, pressure shower, eucalyptus-scent steam room, and a Jacuzzi with garden views, the spa offers a complete service. Signature treatments include a moonlight couple’s massage accompanied by sparkling wine and chocolate-covered strawberries, body wraps made from grapes or chocolate, and citrus facials, with many services using products made from seeds and herbs harvested from the hotel's own botanical garden. There is also a large, free-form pool with a swim-up bar and a well-equipped fitness center. And although the resort isn't set on the beach, it maintains an exclusive beach club with a swimming pool, lounge areas, and a restaurant and bar on a covered terrace with ocean views.

Best Gay-Friendly: Almar Resort Luxury LGBT Beach Front Experience
Renowned as an international gay-friendly destination, Puerto Vallarta has many hotels and nightspots dedicated to providing a safe and lively atmosphere for the LBGTQ+ community. However, the Almar Resort Luxury LGBT Beach Front Experience is the only beachfront property dedicated to this group. Located in front of Los Muertos Beach, the most famous gay beach in Mexico, the Mantamar Beach Club is one of the most fashionable places to spend a day in the sun, with an infinity pool (including a flying pool suspended in the air), sushi and cocktails, and beautiful sunset views.
The hotel is home to one of the trendiest LGBTQ+ nightspots in town, the exclusive Sky Top Bar — a sophisticated cocktail lounge with panoramic views over the city. The bar is open with breakfast in the mornings and Jacuzzi tubs in the afternoon, along with gourmet food and speciality cocktails, extravagant shows, and local and international DJs in the evening. There is also a day spa, a gym, and a concierge service that can arrange activities within the area.
Best for Golf: Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita
Avid golfers should consider the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, where two Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses offer superb, oceanside links amid sand dunes. The 18-hole Bahia course contains a multitude of sand traps and water hazards overlooking the beaches of El Faro, including one hole located directly on the sands. Meanwhile, the 18 holes at the Pacifico course include the Tail of the Whale, the world’s only natural island hole, where players must drive the ball over 170 yards of open water in order to reach the green. For serious players looking for a fresh challenge after these two courses, the Litibu golf course is located just a little further up the coast.
The resort offers a five-star experience with oceanside pools and lazy river rides, tennis courts, a spa, and several restaurants ranging from gourmet dining to casual beachside kitchens. Guest accommodations include clifftop suites with private infinity pools overlooking the ocean and private retreats in luxurious hacienda-style villas.
