Sure, you could just use an old sheet or blanket when you head out for a picnic, but on the damp ground—or after a drink tips over—the picnic might be over before it can begin. Proper picnic blankets, typically made from water-resistant or even waterproof material like fleece and nylon, are an inexpensive, ultra-practical way to avoid disappointment on a cute park date or a day out with the kids. Plus, they’re not just for picnics: You can use these outdoor blankets for playdates, outdoor concerts, or days at the beach, too.

We love picnic blankets that are committed to making your life easier (after all, packing up everything you need for a picnic, especially with dogs or kids in tow, can be a logistical feat). Look for features like storage bags, weighted corner pockets, and other clever details to help keep it all together. (One blanket we found even has loops to hook your car keys onto, so they don’t get lost in the sand or grass.)

Here are our best picnic blanket picks.

Best Overall: Scuddles Picnic Outdoor Blanket

What We Like

The Scuddles Picnic Outdoor Blanket looks as good as it performs, too. With a classic stripe design, this soft blanket boasts a waterproof backing—making it perfect for use at the park, beach, or any outdoor setting in case of any spills. Its construction also means the picnic blanket is easy to clean, as you can just shake and wipe off any dirt, sand, or other debris. Machine washable, this blanket can be folded up and carried via its included strap.

Fabric Type: Waterproof PEVA backing | Dimensions: 52 x 57 inches (open), 58 x 58 inches (open), 58 x 76 inches (open), 60 x 60 inches (open), 60 x 79 inches (open), and 80 x 80 inches (open)

Best Classic: Pendleton Motor Robe with Leather Carrier

What We Like
  • Made of 100 percent wool

  • Has a leather carrier

  • Made in the U.S.

What We Don't Like
  • Dry clean only

Pendleton’s wool blankets have long been loved for their quality and warmth. Once called a “steamer rug” during the early days of 20th-century travel, these blankets were originally used to keep those traveling by ship, train, and car warm. Woven from pure virgin wool, the blankets today are an emblem of American-made quality. The leather carrier makes it easy for toting to and from the picnic site, while it’s also great for movie nights at home. The only caveat is that Pendleton’s blankets are dry clean only, so don’t spill any wine during your alfresco meal.

Fabric Type: 100 percent virgin wool | Dimensions: 52 x 66 inches plus 3.5 inches self-fringe (open)

Best Large: Oniva Blanket Tote XL Outdoor Picnic Blanket

What We Like
  • Has a carrying strap

  • Water-resistant underside

  • Has a security pocket

What We Don't Like
  • Can be difficult to fold back up

Oniva's Blanket Tote XL Outdoor Picnic Blanket has all the features you'd want in a picnic blanket for the whole family, including its handy carrying tote, water-resistant underside, and 38 square feet of picnic and play space. This massive blanket is both practical and cozy (thanks to that soft, polyester fleece top), making it ideal for days out. We love the bonus feature of a hidden security pocket, too, so your keys, cash, and phone can be safely stored.

Fabric Type: 45 percent polyester, 45 percent polyethylene vinyl acetate, 10 percent polyurethane | Dimensions: 18 x 11 x 5 (folded), 70 x 80 inches (open)

Best for Beach: Wekapo Sand Free Beach Blanket

What We Like
  • Water-resistant

  • Lightweight

  • Comes with anchors

What We Don't Like
  • Becomes hot over time if not covered

This nylon blanket is perfect for the beach. It’s made from water-resistant ripstop nylon—meaning it dries quickly, and you can shake the sand out rather than having it trapped in blanket fibers. But just because it’s lightweight doesn’t mean it’s going to fly away if a gust comes by: it’s built with four corner pockets you can fill with sand for an anchor, or there are holes built in for stakes for particularly windy days. This picnic blanket comes with six stakes (you only need four, but the manufacturer included two more as extras). The 9 x 10-foot blanket folds down into a 6 x 7-inch compression sack for the ride home.

Fabric Type: 100 percent nylon | Dimensions: 9 x 10 feet (open), 6 x 7-inches (folded)

Best Waterproof: L.L. Bean Waterproof Outdoor Blanket

What We Like
  • Waterproof backing

  • Machine-washable

  • Includes a stuff sack

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

L.L. Bean knows what good outdoor gear is made of, and their picnic blanket is just as well-designed for the elements. Made from 100 percent polyester fleece on one side, the blanket’s bottom is made from 100 percent nylon to keep any moisture from soaking in from the ground and through the material. When you’re done, just roll it up and pop it in its stuff sack. At 72 x 58 inches, there’s room on here for the family—or go a size up to fit more with the XL version.

Fabric Type: 100 percent polyester fleece and 100 percent nylon | Dimensions: 72 x 58 inches (open)

Best Packable: Matador Pocket Blanket

What We Like
  • Lightweight

  • Water-resistant

  • Can be anchored with sand or stakes

What We Don't Like
  • Difficult to put back into pouch

Perfect for alfresco meals while hiking, camping, or just spending the day at the beach, Matador’s Pocket Blanket is lightweight (3.8 ounces) and is made of durable nylon to keep any dampness away. For particularly windy days, there are sand pockets, weighted corners, and built-in corner stakes, so everything stays put. It’s big enough to comfortably fit two to four adults but manages to fold down into a pocket-sized storage pouch (folding patterns are included, too).

Fabric Type: Nylon | Dimensions: 4.5 x 2.7 x 1.1 inches (folded), 63 x 44 inches (open)

Best for Kids: JJ Cole Compact and Outdoor Waterproof Blanket

What We Like
  • Water-resistant

  • Easy to clean

  • Has a carrying strap

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

Made by baby-product specialist JJ Cole, this slightly cushy blanket is great for little ones—and it’s the perfect blanket to keep around for laying out in the backyard, taking to the park, and heading to an outdoor playdate. It’s water-resistant, durable, and (most importantly) easy to clean: You just need to wipe it down if there’s a spill. Plus, a yoga mat-like shoulder strap makes it a cinch to tote around.

Fabric Type: 100 percent polyester | Dimensions: 5 x 5 feet (open) or 7 x 5 feet (open)

Best for Pets: Monkey Mat Quilted Monkey Mat

What We Like
  • Durable

  • Loops secure keys and pet leashes

  • Weighted corners

  • Waterproof bottom

What We Don't Like
  • Not cushioned like other options

Featured on Shark Tank, Monkey Mat's Quilted Monkey Mat is the perfect solution for a day out with everyone in tow—including a dog or two. Ripstop nylon means this picnic blanket will hold up, even with paws running around it, and the center of the blanket has several loop attachments where you can secure your car keys and dog leashes. Weighted corners keep the blanket down when you're playing ball with your pup. Even more, it’s waterproof on the bottom and water-resistant on the top.

Fabric Type: Ripstop nylon | Dimensions: 5 x 5 feet (open), 10 x 10 inches (folded)

Best for Camping: Yeti Lowlands Blanket

What We Like
  • Waterproof backing

  • Durable

  • Machine-washable

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

It makes sense that one of the top makers of coolers and thermoses would know a little something about blankets that keep you warm on the cold ground. The Lowlands blanket, while a bit of a splurge, makes outdoor spaces much cozier with all-terrain fabric that is backed with a waterproof layer and fronted by a super-soft fabric. It’s kind of a combo of a ground cover, tarp, and blanket, making it ideal for camping. It’s designed to repel dirt, burrs, and pet pair, so it’s great for any fur friends that you bring along with you—even after they get a case of the zoomies in the fresh air. And when you’re back home? Just throw it in the washer—you can even put it in the dryer with other odds and ends from the trip.

Fabric Type: Polyester and rayon | Dimensions: 55 x 78 inches (open)

Best for Cold Weather: Down Under Outdoors Picnic Blanket

What We Like
  • Water- and wind-resistant

  • Thick and plush

  • Lifetime warranty

What We Don't Like
  • Only comes in one size

One of the softest, coziest blankets to perch on on the cold ground, the Down Under Outdoors Picnic Blanket is great for picnics in colder weather. The back of the blanket is wind- and water-resistant and has a barrier built in just in case your thermos of hot chocolate spills. It’s also super plush and thicker than most blankets, with two layers quilted for super-thick comfort. If somehow you’re unhappy with the blanket, it comes with a lifetime warranty, so you can send it in for a replacement.

Fabric Type: 250gsm fleece, polyester, and polyurethane | Dimensions: 82 x 55 inches (open)

Final Verdict

The Scuddles Picnic Outdoor Blanket might look like a budget version of the Pendleton on our list, but it performs well above its price tag for any afternoon alfresco. The waterproof backing means you won’t get a wet bum from damp grass or soil, shaking off crumbs is super-easy, and you can easily throw it in the washing machine when you get home, too.

What to Look for in a Picnic Blanket

Portability

You don’t want a picnic blanket that’s hard to tote—stuffing it into your daypack or beach bag with everything else you have to take with you for a day out can be a serious challenge. Look for picnic blankets that come with portability features, like a strap, pocket, or carrier it can roll or fold up into.

Material

Sure, cotton works, but with the range of technically super-powered fabrics these days, there are far better options available. There’s nothing that ruins a picnic quite like realizing, just after you’ve set everything else out, that there’s moisture from the grass or ground slowly sinking into your pants or dress. Look for waterproof material—or at least a waterproof backing—that creates a damp-free barrier between you and the ground so you can enjoy the outdoors anytime. Other blankets come with material that’s meant to be easily wiped down in case of spills, which are particularly good for families.

Size

The best picnic blankets are ones that have enough room for your usual crew (whether it’s yourself, your family, or significant other) to spread out on—and food and drinks, too. If it comes with an easy way to wrap it up, the bigger the better, in our opinion. Top tip: Compare the picnic blanket size to a rug in your house to see if it’ll be enough square footage to hold everyone and everything.
