There are a lot of folks who swear that their backyard grill is the only place in town to get a good steak. For those who are less culinarily inclined, there are a number of really great places to get a steak in Memphis. You can get a good steak at many restaurants in the area, but this list features only steakhouses -- that is, restaurants that specialize in steak. Get ready for an all-American meal of steak, baked potato, sides, and an adult beverage (if you're so inclined.) These places are a cut above the rest.
In local polls, Folk's Folly, which opened in 1977, is frequently voted the winner for the best steak in town. It is the city's original prime steak house. While it's more expensive than other options, it's worth it. This family-owned restaurant has been passing down recipes, not just for its steak, but it's delicious sauces including barbecue butter and Maker's Mark peppercorn. If red meat isn't your thing, there are other options like seafood on the menu. Dress nicely; this is a classy establishment.
Fleming's made be a chain (an upscale one!) but it's known for its tender, flavorful steaks. It offers ample choice for steak cuts and companions as well as sides. Don't miss Fleming's signature potatoes with cream, jalapeño, and cheddar cheese; chipotle cheddar macaroni and cheese; sautéed mushrooms; and grilled asparagus (don't worry; they are made to share!) The restaurant is also known for its long wine list; ask your sommelier to give you the perfect pairing.
This little gem of a restaurant is located in Bartlett, where it's been serving up steaks since 1976. The atmosphere is casual; in fact, you might feel like you're dining in somebody's home instead of in a restaurant. Drinks are served in Mason jars, and steaks are reasonably priced. Side Porch's special marinade makes the steaks original, and its homemade croutons and dressings make the salad a special part of the meal.
Texas de Brazil is the place to go when you are hungry. This Brazilian steakhouse serves all-you-can-eat beef, pork, chicken, and lamb, and it has an unlimited salad/sides bar. You pay one set price for your entire meal ($45 per person for dinner as of August 2017), but drinks and desserts are extra.
Ruth's Chris Steak House might be a chain, but it still serves up one of the best steaks in town. Its 500-degree plates are a trademark, just part of the steakhouse's emphasis on perfection for its prime cuts of beef. It also only uses custom-aged USDA Prime Midwestern beef that will melt in your mouth. The Memphis location is classy, beautiful, and the perfect setting for a celebratory or business dinner.
The Butcher Shop in Cordova is proud to serve grain-fed beef that's hand cut daily and cooked over hickory charcoal. It offers a long list of steaks that can be enhanced with pepper sauce, steak Oscar, or lobster tail. Homemade desserts like three-layer strawberry cake, creme brûlée, and cashew crunch cheesecake will make you want to save some room. Burgers are the star of the show every Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and yes, they are grilled over hickory charcoal.
