Travelers flying to Los Angeles will likely land at LAX, the bustling hub and jumping-off point for flights headed to Hawaii, Asia and other major U.S. cities. If you find yourself with a stopover or canceled flight, there are several airport hotels scattered near LAX – although some are more comfortable than others and may include breakfast, swimming pools and shuttle service. If you’d like to see the city a little, the Mariposa Metro Rail station is just across the street for easy access to downtown Los Angeles. Grab a drink at the Pavilion Lounge, or sneak in a workout at the fitness center. There’s a business center if you’re in the area for work, or if you’re bringing the kids, ask about the cribs, high chairs and children’s menus. Even the airport hotels in Los Angeles can cost a pretty penny, but the Best Western Plus Suites Hotel Inglewood has everything a budget traveler needs for a stopover at a reasonable price. Just two miles from LAX, the hotel offers freebies like hot breakfast buffet, WiFi and an airport shuttle. Relax in the chic lobby lounge or take jump in the outdoor pool and hot tub. Rooms have contemporary décor, microwaves and mini refrigerators. For a bite to eat, TripAdvisor members highlighted the excellent Mexican restaurant a block away. Underground parking is available for a charge.
Most Convenient: Courtyard Los Angeles LAX/Century Boulevard
If you have an early morning flight and want to sleep in as late as possible, the Courtyard by Marriott is less than a block from the airport. Recently remodeled, rooms are soundproofed with comfortable bedding and have plenty of movie channels. The on-site American restaurant has breakfast and dinner options, and the bar serves up some specialty cocktails. Other amenities include a fitness center, free WiFi and a 24-hour airport shuttle. There is no pool, but guests can relax in the outdoor courtyard or in the lobby lounge.
Best Day Rooms: Embassy Suites by Hilton LAX North
If your flight departs in the evening and you need a place to re-group and catch some shut eye, consider booking a day room at the Embassy Suites by Hilton LAX North. Instead of sleeping overnight, the day rooms grant access to the room – and all the usual hotel amenities – between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m for a fraction of the cost of nightly rates. The newly renovated hotel has a beautiful eight-story center atrium with a waterfall, garden plants and plenty of seating to relax after a flight. There’s also free WiFi, a free airport shuttle and guest laundry. Grab a bit to eat at the on-site restaurant, which serves “California cuisine” with fresh ingredients, or sip a cocktail from the bar. Best For Families: The Residence Inn by Marriott Los Angeles LAX
The Residence Inn by Marriott Los Angeles/LAX has some of the largest suites near the airport, making it ideal for families traveling together. Kids will love the outdoor heated pool area with plenty of lounge chairs and cabanas for mom and dad to relax – not to mention a crackling fire pit in the evenings. Each of the 231 guest rooms have sofabeds and full kitchens, and breakfast is included in the room rate. There’s also a picnic area and convenience store, as well as a Starbucks, sub shop and pizzeria attached to the hotel. A free shuttle is available to the airport, but as TripAdvisor members noted, you should allow for extra time because it typically takes a while.
Best for a Long Layover: Foghorn Harbor Inn
If you have a long layover and would like to relax away from the airport, the Foghorn Harbor Inn puts you right on the beach. Located in Marina Del Rey, the Foghorn Harbor Inn has an old-fashioned, “mom and pop” feel about six miles from LAX. The waterfront hotel has free parking and 24-hour airport transfers are included, but you’ll have to call in advance to arrange this. There are 23 rooms with beachy décor and views of the marina. Enjoy free breakfast in the indoor/outdoor café, and unwind on the soft-sand beach. A number of restaurants and shops are within walking distance.
Best Amenities: Hyatt Place LAX El Segundo
Weary travelers will appreciate the Hyatt Place LAX, which has a roster of amenities so there’s no need to leave the property until it’s time to board your flight (and the shuttle is available 24 hours a day, but be sure to call the hotel and schedule your pick up). Take a dip in the swimming pool and hot tub, or relax on the outdoor patio by the evening fireplace. A free breakfast is included with the room, but the hotel has a 24/7 menu of American favorites, in addition to a grab-and-go market and a cocktail bar. Rooms come with sleeper sofas, free WiFi, mini refrigerators, and the signature “Odds and Ends” program that lets guests borrow any necessary items they may have forgotten. There’s also a fitness center, business center, parking (fee applies) and an electric charge station.
Best Pet Friendly: Candlewood Suites LAX Hawthorne
If you can’t leave home without your furry friend, the pet-friendly Candlewood Suites is a great choice and has extremely reasonable pet fees. The hotel also has a 24-hour business center, fitness center, guest laundry, free parking and an airport shuttle (on request). There is no restaurant on the property, but it’s easy to whip up something in the room - they are equipped with full kitchens. Swing by the market shop on the lower level for groceries or guests can go to the few fast-food restaurants across the street and bring it back to the relaxing outdoor patio.
