A kid-sized sleeping bag is an essential piece of family camping gear, but it also comes in handy for scouting trips, sleep-away camp, and sleepovers at friends’ and relatives’ houses. Choosing a high-quality kids' sleeping bag can help keep your children warm and comfortable. When selecting one, it’s important to consider your kid’s size and how he or she will be using it, as kids' sleeping bag lengths and minimum temperature ratings vary greatly.

Sleeping bags come in either down or synthetic fill. While down is lighter and warmer, synthetic fill is cheaper and more water-resistant. Based on its intended use, you can choose between a summer-season, three-season, or 4-season (winter weight) option, with three-season bags being ideal for most situations. To aid in your search, we’ve done the research and found great kids' sleeping bags for all types of needs and situations.

Read on for our picks of the best kids' sleeping bags available.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What materials should I look for?

“Sleeping bags come in two fill types: down and synthetic,” said Whitman. “Down is a natural fill that is lighter and warmer than synthetic options, but it is also more expensive and not as water-resistant. When a down bag gets a little damp or wet, it is very unpleasant to sleep in. For a child, I recommend a synthetic sleeping bag as they are more durable, and better value for money as most kids will grow out of a sleeping bag in a few years.”

  • How does temperature rating work?

“Temperature ratings are a measure of a bag's warmth,” said Whitman. “There are two main standards, the European Norm (EN) and International Standards Organisation (ISO). There is usually a comfort rating (the temperature at which a cold sleeper will feel comfortable), and Low Limit Rating (the temperature at which a warm sleeper would feel comfortable). The Low Limit is obviously always less than the Comfort Rating. Summer season bags are usually rated at 30+ degrees F. Three-season bags are 15-30 degrees F. And 4-season bags are less than 15 degrees F.”

  • How do I wash a sleeping bag?

“Most sleeping bags can be washed on a gentle cycle with warm water and appropriate soap,” said Whitman. “Never use fabric softener and don't use a washing machine with an agitator as this can rip the sleeping bag seams. Always read the manufacturer's washing guidance.”
