The Rundown

Though not required by most states, jet ski insurance is a reliable and affordable way to cover damage to your personal watercraft (PWC) and protect yourself from third-party liability claims. The best jet ski insurance provider depends on your location, budget, jet ski age and model, and how you plan to use the equipment. Luckily, insurers offer a range of coverage options, and many start at roughly $100 per year.

To help you navigate the best jet ski insurance to fit your needs, we rounded up the best providers, so you can get the coverage you need.

Best Overall: SkiSafe

SkiSafe

Why We Chose It: We chose SkiSafe as the overall best jet ski insurance because of its easy-to-use online quote generator, flexible coverage options, and extensive discounts.

What We Like
  • Online quote builder is user-friendly and does not require a phone number

  • Liability coverage available up to roughly $1,000,000

  • All SkiSafe underwriters are top-rated AM Best companies

What We Don’t Like
  • The parent company has had some customer complaints

SkiSafe is an insurance company that specializes in boat and personal watercraft coverage and provides jet ski insurance policies underwritten by AXIS Insurance Company.

Jet ski owners can choose from a wide range of coverage options, including liability-only policies that cover third-party property damage and personal injury, and policies that include medical payments, towing, and roadside assistance. On average, SkiSafe estimates that its customers pay about $200 less, annually, for the same coverage from another company.

In addition to its robust coverage options, SkiSafe features an incredibly user-friendly online quoting tool. Unlike some other jet ski insurance companies, though, prospective customers don’t have to provide a social security number or phone number to get a quote, which simplifies the process. The tool generates several options: liability only, basic package, premium package, and a "build your own" option; you can then buy through the site or call or email for additional assistance.

Policyholders can take advantage of SkiSafe’s automated payment plans and file claims through its online self-service center. The company also boasts largely positive customer reviews and its underwriter, AXIS Insurance Company, has a stellar AM Best (credit rating company) rating.

Best Membership Benefits: BoatUS

BoatUS

BoatUS

Why We Chose It: Though BoatUS membership isn’t required to qualify for jet ski insurance, policyholders who join can take advantage of advanced benefits like savings on purchases at marinas and marine businesses, towing assistance, and even on jet ski insurance through GEICO.

What We Like
  • Online quote tool is fast and user-friendly

  • Membership can help save on GEICO’s jet ski policies and at more than 1,200 boating businesses

  • Policies are underwritten by GEICO Marine Insurance Company

What We Don’t Like
  • Coverage options are more limited than those offered by other providers

BoatUS—or Boat Owners Association of The United States—was founded in 1966 to provide marine recreation and towing services. The organization was transferred to GEICO in 2015 and now offers boat and personal watercraft insurance policies underwritten by GEICO Marine Insurance Company.

BoatUS’s actual cash value coverage—the recommended coverage option for PWC— comes with a low premium and pays the current market value of your jet ski if there is a total loss. Liability-only coverage, on the other hand, is the lowest cost option and only includes essential liability coverage plus salvage and wreck removal. To get started, prospective policyholders can take advantage of the GEICO/BoatUS online quote tool or contact a specialist by phone.

While jet ski policy options are somewhat more limited than those offered by other providers, BoatUS membership benefits help the provider stand out. A basic annual membership costs about $25 and includes savings at more than 1,200 boating-related businesses. Advanced member options include towing benefits for roughly $15 to $154 per year. But the On The Water and On The Road towing and trailer assist options are free.

Best Discounts: Progressive

Progressive

Progressive

Why We Chose It: Progressive stands out from other jet ski insurers because of its huge offering of discounts, including for multi-policy holders, responsible drivers, and operators who have completed an approved safety course.

What We Like
  • Extensive discounts plus small and large accident forgiveness

  • Disappearing deductibles down to $0

  • Coverage costs as little as $100 per year

What We Don’t Like
  • Some customers report negative experiences with customer service agents

As one of the largest auto insurance companies in the U.S., Progressive also offers more specialized policies like those for jet skis and other personal watercraft. Basic liability policies can cost as little as roughly $100 per year and coverage is nationwide, so there are no limits on where you can use your jet ski. Progressive customers can also purchase medical payments coverage, personal property replacement coverage, and total loss coverage. Certain roadside assistance services are provided at no additional cost.

Progressive really shines, however, when it comes to its broad selection of discounts, including for multi-policy holders, responsible drivers, original owners, and owner/operators who have successfully completed an approved safety course. Additional discounts are available for policyholders who transfer from another company, get an advanced quote, or pay in full. And, like some other providers, customers can benefit from small and large accident forgiveness and disappearing deductibles (down to $0).

Jet ski owners can use Progressive’s online quote tool or contact a representative via phone. Likewise, policyholders can submit claims via phone or the online platform and a specialized claims rep will reach out to schedule an inspection, explain the estimate, and help schedule repairs. Progressive has a stellar AM Best rating.

Best Jet Ski Lift Coverage: Markel

Markel Insurance

 Markel Insurance

Why We Chose It: Boat lifts may not be included in your homeowners policy, but Markel’s jet ski policies can bridge this gap, making it our favorite jet ski insurance company for boat lift coverage.

What We Like
  • Coverage options are extensive and include optional boat lift coverage

  • Coverage costs as little as roughly $100 per year

  • Discounts can save customers up to roughly 35% off their overall cost

What We Don’t Like
  • Getting an online quote requires providing a phone number

Markel is an AM Best insurance company that offers customers jet ski insurance, as well as coverage for jet ski lifts (a feature that’s not always available on PWC insurance policies).

Coverage starts as low as roughly $100 per year, and Markel customers can save up to about 35% on their policies by taking advantage of multi-unit, experienced boater, and mature operator discounts. There is also a diminishing deductible option that can reduce a policyholder’s deductible to $0 after four years of being accident-free.

Coverage options are also extensive and include everything from physical and ice/freezing damage to consequential damage. Prospective customers can also count on coverage for watercraft liability, medical payments, uninsured boaters, emergency towing and assistance, and personal effects.

Shoppers can get a fast and free quote by contacting a PWC insurance specialist by phone or by using the online quote tool. The most accurate quotes require providing your social security number, but it isn’t required. That said, you will have to enter your phone number, birthday, contact information, and information about the watercraft and operator(s).

Best Customer Support: United Marine Underwriters

United Marine Underwriters

 United Marine Underwriters

Why We Chose It: Specializing in boat and personal watercraft insurance, United Marine Underwriters excels because each policyholder is assigned a primary service representative.

What We Like
  • Available in every state except New Mexico

  • Policyholders receive a personal service representative to provide one-on-one support

  • There is an after hours claims number for emergency claims

What We Don’t Like
  • Website and quoting tool are outdated

A specialty insurance company that focuses on boats and personal watercraft, United Marine Underwriters (UMU) offers policies underwritten by three national insurance companies, all of which have stellar AM Best ratings. UMU has been in business since 1990 and is licensed in every state except New Mexico, though the website indicates the company is expanding coverage there soon.

That said, UMU made our list because of the company’s dedication to customer support. While the website is somewhat outdated and difficult to navigate, prospective policyholders can get a free, online quote in about 90 seconds, and, they're also available by phone. Once a policy is bound, each customer is assigned a primary service person who will assist with policy questions, claims, and anything else that arises under the policy.

Unlike several jet ski insurance providers that made our list, United Marine Underwriters does not offer online claim reporting. However, claims can be reported by phone or email and there is a dedicated contact number for after-hours emergency claims.

Final Verdict

Whether you’ve had your jet ski for a while or are planning to purchase a new one, there’s a personal watercraft insurer that can meet your unique needs and budget. Even if your state and marina don’t require insurance, a basic liability policy can protect you from the unexpected. And for those who want more extensive coverage, it’s easy to build a policy with total loss coverage, personal property replacement, and other safeguards.

Our overall best jet ski insurance option SkiSafe offers low-cost jet ski coverage nationwide. Though the company does not write its own policies, it is bolstered by AXIS Insurance Company, a stellar AM Best company. What’s more, customers can take advantage of a user-friendly online quoting tool and simple claims reporting.

What Does Jet Ski Insurance Cover?

At a minimum, jet ski insurance should cover liability losses sustained during operation by both the policyholder and others. This typically covers damage to another craft or dock, death or bodily injury to a third-party due to policyholder negligence, or the negligence of others while operating the insured PWC. Depending on the scope of coverage, however, jet ski insurance policies may also cover physical damage to the PWC, personal property replacement, uninsured or underinsured motorists, and towing assistance.

Keep in mind, however, that not all jet skis can be insured. In fact, policies are often unavailable for jet skis that have been modified to enhance their performance and speed. Likewise, the operation of a jet ski from dusk to dawn is generally not covered by PWC policies.

How Much Does Jet Ski Insurance Cost?

On average, jet ski or personal watercraft insurance costs roughly $100 to $500 per year. Costs are calculated based on factors like the make, model, and age of the jet ski, value of the equipment, whether it has undergone any modifications, and its horsepower and maximum operating speed. Many insurers provide discounts for policy bundling, responsible drivers, and the completion of approved safety courses.

Should I Insure My Jet Ski?

Most states don’t require insurance for jet skis but some marinas will require proof of insurance if you plan to use a slip or mooring. What’s more, jet skis can be pricey and insurance can help you cover repairs in the case of a collision or protect you from financial liability stemming from collisions and other incidents with third parties. Importantly, jet skis and other personal watercraft are not typically covered in a homeowners policy, but jet ski insurance can keep you covered if your equipment is damaged while being stored at your home.

How We Chose the Best Jet Ski Insurance

To choose the best jet ski insurance providers, we reviewed 15 companies and compared them based on factors like price, coverage options, and the availability of discounts. Where possible, we also considered available policy limits, deductibles, and the overall affordability of coverage. Finally, we looked at customer support options, AM Best ratings, and whether each option offers an online quoting tool.
