Located just a block from the beach, this stylish hotel has it all: two swimming pools ringed with chaise lounges and umbrellas, an open-air bar and grill, a cozy outdoor lounge with fire pits, as well as an artistic and inviting lobby and café with breakfast pastries and artisan coffee. Rooms vary, but have high ceilings with exposed beams, hardwood floors and thoughtful décor that give guests a sense of staying in a home in the English countryside. Some rooms also have private balconies and outdoor spaces. TripAdvisor members loved the laid-back, welcoming feel of the beach house.

While many Montauk hotels are located across the street from the ocean, the Ocean Surf Resort is set right on a beautiful stretch of beach with stairs that lead straight down to the sand. The heated pool area is dotted with lounge chairs and a sun deck faces the ocean for spectacular views. A family fun center and numerous restaurants are less than a five-minute walk from the hotel, and the Montauk Brewing Company is 10 minutes by foot. Rooms have kitchenettes with refrigerators, stove tops, microwave ovens, toasters and coffee makers, as well as air conditioning and cable TV. Oceanfront rooms have private balconies, but otherwise accommodations are basic, clean and cozy.

Guests can use beach umbrellas, chairs, boogie boards and towels or borrow a bicycle and take a spin around the town. Bright and cheerful rooms have locally inspired artwork, a microwave and mini fridge, Jacuzzi tubs and free WiFi. The 20-room, Aqualina Inn is perched on the south side of Montauk across from the ocean, within walking distance to Kirk Park Beach. The Montauk bus and Long Island Rail Road stations are about a mile-and-a-half away and the Hampton Jitney bus is just a five-minute walk.  Rooms are clean and modernized with wood-framed beds and flooring, mini refrigerators and microwaves, artistic décor with a nautical touch (think hanging rope mirrors and paintings of the seashore) and private balconies or Jacuzzis (in some). The hotel has a lovely pool and courtyard area with inviting picnic tables and shaded umbrellas. Bicycles, beach gear and barbecue grills are all available at no extra charge to guests.

The stylish, Surf Lodge is the “it” place to stay in Montauk with a weekend lineup of artist residencies, fitness classes and live music performances that draw in the very hip crowds. The lodge blends trendy bohemian décor with the style of a beachside surf hotel (think swaying hammocks, iPod docking stations and private sundecks with views of the water). The bright and airy Aloha restaurant serves organic fare with surf images adorning the walls and surfboards on the ceiling over the bar area. Friends gather at the bar in the evenings, so it can get crowded and noisy. The hotel is just a short walk from the Long Island Rail Road station.

With magnificent views of Block Island Sound (particularly during the sunset), the peaceful, Sun N Sound resort is a reasonably priced, oceanfront option that is popular with families. Rooms come with fully-equipped kitchens for preparing meals (so families can save some cash), and the Sound's beaches are a great choice for little ones (with smaller waves than the south side of Montauk). There’s also a library, sundeck, swimming pool with lounge chairs and barbecue grills for a carefree day. TripAdvisor members loved the charm and coziness of the hotel and that it is steps away from several restaurants and a grocery store.

Located within walking distance to Gosman’s Docks (for restaurants and fishing trips) the 33-room, Kenny’s Tipperary Inn is a perennial favorite that keeps getting better. The newest addition is a tranquil Zen garden with a trickling waterfall, tranquil meditation music and beautiful plants and flowers. Accommodation options range from Standard King Rooms to two-bedroom apartments, but feature handsome wood furnishings (like armoires and desks), refrigerators or full kitchens and balconies. The pool area has barbecues, lounge chairs and tables with Tiki umbrellas. When hunger strikes, the Irish pub at the inn serves up Shepard’s pie, pot roasts and cold pints of beer. TripAdvisor members like that the inn is close to Ditch Plains Beach, the lighthouse and downtown Montauk.
