Houston’s original snoball stand, MAM’s serves New Orleans-style snoballs with finely shaved ice so soft, it’s like a freshly fallen snow. With roughly 50 flavors to choose from, you can play it safe with something traditional like Cherry or Lemon-lime, or go bold with flavors like Creole Cream Cheese or Dill Pickle. MAM’s also offers specialty combos, like Caramel Apple or Mam’s Dilly Spice, as well as a variety of toppings and creams.

Tip: Add a scoop of Blue Bell ice-cream to your snoball or pair it with a Café au lait for an extra special treat.

    Kwality Ice Cream

While Kwality certainly has a selection of standard ice cream fare — like mango or vanilla — they specialize in Indian flavors not often seen in traditional ice cream shops. The gourmet scoops can only be described as decadent, with a rich consistency that rivals the best Italian gelato. For something different, try the falooda kulfi, which features a light rose flavor and is topped with falooda noodles and basil seeds. The store offers more than 30 different flavors, so be sure to try to a few at the counter before ordering.

The New Jersey-based chain has two locations in Houston and prides itself on making wholesome ice cream with only pure ingredients. Its website claims "just one taste will win you over." And that challenge is worth accepting.

    Nu Snowflake Ice

    Nu Ice
    Nu Cafe

Nu Snowflake Ice — often referred to as Nu Ice or Ribbon Ice — takes more than 10 hours to prepare. The ice is finely shaved and laid out in ribbons, and while it has the consistency of a fluffy ice cream, it melts in your mouth like snow, making it a light and refreshing dessert.  You can choose from several flavors — such as strawberry, peanut butter or lychee — and top it all off with a little something extra like condensed milk or fruit. Nu also prides itself on using low-fat, preservative-free ingredients made with all-natural flavors, making it a delicious treat with minimal guilt.

    Juice Box's Shaved Ice

Located right next door to Nu Café is Juice Box, a cozy juice bar that also specializes in Taiwanese treats. The go-to dessert here is shaved ice — but not of the sno-cone variety. This shaved ice is creamy like ice cream and is piled high with sweetened condensed milk, fresh fruit, and ice cream. Try the Mixed Fruit for something on the lighter side or Banana/Strawberry and Chocolate bowl for a banana-split-like treat. The large size is generous and perfect for sharing, so be sure to bring a friend.

Tip: Parking near Juice Box can be tight, so it's best to come during off hours to avoid driving around to find a spot.
