When you think New York City (NYC) landmarks, you might imagine places like Central ParkConey Island, or City Hall. All these sites are popular stops on any trip to New York City, but let’s be honest: C is for cookie.

In a city where unidentified scents frequently fill the air, there’s nothing more soothing than the smell that filters through the front door of your favorite bakery. Even Cookie Monster would agree that with thousands of shapes, sizes, textures, and flavors to choose from, no two cookies taste the same. Here are some of our favorite spots for cookies in NYC.

Levain Bakery

167 W 74th St, New York, NY 10023-2216, USA
Phone +1 917-464-3769

This cookie shop serves freshly baked cookies the size of your fist (well, six ounces of dough to be exact). Five types are baked to order and no trip here is complete without trying each of them: chocolate chip walnut, dark chocolate chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, dark chocolate peanut butter chip, and double chocolate chip. The price tag is well worth it for one of New York’s best cookies. Tuck into the sweet treats at any one of the locations in NYC. Visit the original UWS location or head one of four other locations in New York. (If you want to try the new double chocolate chip cookie head to the NoHo location).

Insomnia Cookies

482 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10016, USA
Phone +1 929-226-6392

This bakery chain is aptly named considering they're open and delivering to New York University dorms and area residents until 3 a.m. There are 11 types of standard warm and chewy cookies on the menu, but we suggest trying one of their three deluxe cookies for maximum satisfaction: chocolate peanut butter cup, triple chocolate chunk, or s'mores. Whether you’re cramming for finals or just hanging out with your friends, there’s no better late-night snack to appease your sweet tooth. Just remember to brush before you go to bed!

Funny Face Bakery

74 E 7th St, New York, NY 10003, USA
Phone +1 646-861-1274

For a delicious cookie with a funny, Instagrammable twist, head to Funny Face Bakery in the East Village. The cookies are definitely pricey ($21 a pop is pretty steep) but with the opportunity to have a treat with the face Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Fab Five member Jonathan van Ness, Lizzo, or characters from "The Office," it's worth a splurge. If you want a cheaper sweet treat, try one of their 6-ounce chocolate chip cookies.

Jacque Torres Chocolate

107 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10017, USA
Phone +1 212-922-3620

The sweet shops of famed chocolatier Jacques Torres serves up three types of cookies: a classic chocolate chip cookie, a double chocolate mudslide cookie, and an oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookie. No matter which you decide to try, make sure to ask for it warm. Be prepared for the chocolate to ooze out of these chewy treats; wash it down with a cup of frozen hot chocolate—a great combination for a warm summer day.
