The view from the Apex Temple Court Hotel in London

There's a lot expected of both business and budget hotels. By nature, they're built for utility — their guests are out exploring the by day, simply requiring place to sleep. Or they're attending meetings and conferences, and expecting functional comfort in between. But neither scenario has to mean a sacrifice of style or charm. From hidden gems to sophisticated suites, here are TripSavvy's favorite budget and business hotels for 2018.

Budget Hotels

Hollywood Orchid Suites: Los Angeles, Calif. — featured in The Best Budget Hotels in Los Angeles

Location, location, location — real estate’s golden rule — is the prime reason this clean family-friendly budget hotel makes the list. A hidden gem in the heart of Hollywood, its spacious suites are tucked discreetly behind the Hollywood & Highland complex and therefore within easy walking distance of the subway and a hit list of La La Land must-dos including the Chinese Theatre, Magic Castle, the Oscars venue, Walk of Fame, Madame Tussauds and Hollywood Bowl. There are also plenty of on-property reasons to book (many of which will save money) like a swimming pool, rooftop terrace, complimentary continental breakfast, kitchens/kitchenettes, free WiFi, a/c, laundry room and a strict no-party policy. –Carrie Bell

Parker Guest House: San Francisco, Calif. — featured in The Best Budget Hotels in San Francisco

Ideally perched at the cusp of SF's Castro and Mission neighborhoods, Parker Guest House provides a personalized alternative to the city's larger hotels, while simultaneously giving guests an opportunity to experience San Francisco like a local. There's a communal front parlor for gathering, and a sunroom for lingering over wine during a daily social hour. The boutique B&B is spread among two picturesque Victorians—neighboring mini-mansions that share ample garden space—and each of its 21 guestrooms are newly renovated. Most of them are en suite, and some even feature their own sitting area and balcony. On site parking is available for a nominal fee, though most things are easily walkable. –Laura Kiniry

Apex Temple Court Hotel: London, England — featured in Comfortable Luxury in the City of London

Just off Fleet Street in London’s legal heartland, the Apex Temple Court Hotel offers a budget base in one of the world’s most expensive cities. Set in a contemporary courtyard, it’s surprisingly quiet given its central location just a 10-minute walk from St Paul’s cathedral and a 15-minute stroll from Covent Garden. The surrounding streets may be home to historic Inns of Court and some of London’s oldest pubs but inside you’ll find modern furniture, bright pops of colour and a stylish restaurant. Drinks are served out on the terrace in the summer months. Rachel Erdos
