What to Look for in Roller Skates and Blades
Adjustability If you have a growing child, it can be hard to justify shelling out money on a new pair of skates each time they go up a size. Adjustable sizing can be a great solution, with easy-to-use, safely locking frames that grow as your child does. Expect plenty of support and cushioning for growing feet, too.
In-line vs. old-school You could argue that in-line skates are also old-school, but the real difference here is how the wheels are aligned: either a 2x2 configuration (skates) or 1x4 (blades). For beginners who want a bit more stability, roller skates are usually a good call. Those who like a little more speed and control, however, might find in-line skates to be the best option.
Cost Roller skates and blades can get expensive quickly, especially if you’re starting out as an adult. If you’re really getting into skating—perhaps joining a roller derby league—it’s a good idea to get a pair that fits you well. If, however, you’re planning on keeping this hobby low-key or buying a pair for a growing child, look for a budget option that’s great when it comes to cushioning but easy on the wallet as well.
