Best Beach Wagons

TripSavvy's Pick

Sekey's Collapsible Wagon checked all the boxes we were looking for in the ideal beach wagon. It rolled easily in the sand, held all the expected gear, and collapsed and folded easily into a trunk. If you're looking for a budget option, our testers loved Seina's Compact Collapsible Wagon.

A day at the beach can sound downright daunting when you consider all the gear you need to schlep with you—especially if you’re packing for a day out with the family or celebrating a special occasion with a group. You’ve got your towels, sunscreen, beach chairs, umbrellas, and sand toys. And that’s not even mentioning the food.

Make it so much easier on yourself—and put the fun back in “fun day out”—by investing in a beach wagon or cart to help ease your burden, shifting all of the cargo out of your arms and onto a sturdy set of wheels. The top options will be easy to maneuver and store compactly, and durable enough to carry heavy loads.

We sent 19 beach wagons to our testers and asked them to evaluate how well these performed on trips to the beach. These 10 were rated the highest.

Best Overall

Sekey Collapsible Cart with Brake

5
Sekey Collapsible Cart with Brake

Amazon

What We Like
  • Collapses and folds out easily

  • Well-placed straps

  • Good all-terrain wheels and good amount of space for carrrying

What We Don't Like
  • A little heavier than expected

The Sekey Folding Wagon Cart features four seven-inch rubber wheels with all-terrain treads built to handle sand, grass, and all kinds of uneven ground. It has an adjustable handle, and the folding load box is made from 600D double-layered Oxford fabric supported by a heavy-duty steel frame. With a 94-liter carrying capacity and an incredible maximum weight capacity of 176 pounds, the beach cart has plenty of space for all your belongings, whether carrying towels and beach chairs or hauling firewood. It has two mesh cup holders to keep your drinks upright during transport.

The Sekey beach wagon sets up in seconds (no assembly required) and folds away easily for convenient storage, compact enough to pack away in the trunk of your car. It's an excellent option for the beach but can also be used to carry groceries, camping gear, fishing, athletic equipment, or all the fixings for a summer cookout.

Our testers reported the wagon was a bit heavier than expected (it weighs about 25 pounds) but had well-placed straps. They were impressed by how easily it moved through the sand. "I would recommend this cart to anyone needing a cart that can handle multiple kinds of terrain and pack away nicely when not in use," said a tester. The upshot: This wagon checked all of the practicality and functionality aspects and standards we were looking for in an ideal beach wagon.

Beau Jardin Folding Beach Wagon

Beau Jardin Folding Beach Wagon

Amazon

What We Like
  • Holds a bit more than the Sekey

  • Moved very easily through the sand, thanks to the large tires

  • Easy folding and unfolding

What We Don't Like
  • A bit pricier and heavier than the Sekey

Beau Jardin's Folding Beach Wagon tested just as well as the Sekey Collapsible Wagon but is a bit larger, weighing in at 29 pounds. If you're OK with the few extra pounds, this slightly more expensive option will also boost your load capacity to 300 pounds. Simply put, if you think you might need extra space, we recommend this wagon.

It's a very similar construction to the Sekey, with seven-inch wheels that maneuvered easily through the sand. And its sturdy 600D polyester and steel frame build should ensure that this wagon lasts for many years. Our testers called it the "perfect beach wagon" and enjoyed that no assembly was required and how easily it folded open and collapsed. They also enjoyed some bonus features like three different cup holders and compartments and the deep space for carrying many items. "If you're looking for a straightforward wagon to carry and hold your things on a beach, camping trip, etcetera, this is your best option," a tester reported.

Seina Compact Collapsible Wagon

Seina Compact Collapsible Wagon

Walmart

What We Like
  • External storage pouches

  • Telescoping handle

  • Folds easily

What We Don't Like
  • Smaller wheels that make it tougher to move on sand

  • Awkward T-shaped grip

This compact wagon is an excellent budget-priced bet with some nice perks for functionality and convenience: it has a telescoping handle and two mesh external holders for sunscreen, water bottles, or whatever items you want to keep separate and upright. This wagon folds for wall-hanging storage or easy transportation in most car trunks. It's got similar 600D polyester fabric, and a steel frame as the two top picks above.

Our testers enjoyed that no setup was necessary, and it was easy to open and close. They loved the compactness of it and how easily it opened and closed, and for the price range, they were impressed by the durability. Although they did have some issues moving the small tires through the sand, other Amazon commenters said that they were able to move through the sand easily enough. If you're looking for a budget wagon or a wagon that you'd use more for groceries or camping, with the occasional beach trip, this is a good bet.

Whitsunday Collapsible Folding Cart

What We Like
  • Lightweight and very compact

  • Great for anyone tight on space (in a car or home or both)

  • Easy folding

What We Don't Like
  • Smaller size reduces load capacity

  • Wheels had some trouble moving through the sand

For its cost, this wagon punched well above its weight. Like many others on the list, the Whitsunday Collapsible Folding Cart came out of the box, ready to go. Our testers enjoyed how easily this wagon folded up and back down. They also loved how lightweight (it's one of the lightest we tested) and compact it folded to store in a car. That more compact size, however, does reduce the amount of storage capacity. The wagon's smaller wheels made it tougher to pull through the sand than some of the larger wagons tested. Still, for the price, this is a high-quality wagon.

"High quality, works well on multiple types of terrain despite not being the best in sand, good price, and folds up nicely for storage or transport," one tester reported. "This wagon is great for anyone looking to load and unload items to and from quickly and easily as well as travel with the wagon."

Best All-Terrain

Mac Sports Collapsible All-Terrain Utility Wagon with Attached Mini Table

Mac Sports Collapsible All-Terrain Utility Wagon with Attached Mini Table

Amazon

What We Like
  • Easy folding

  • Heavy-duty wheels

  • Great maneuverability

What We Don't Like
  • Oversized wheels added wait and complicated storage

Those wanting to explore more inaccessible areas of the beach should consider the MacSports Heavy Duty All-Terrain Beach Wagon. This model also boasts a sturdy steel construction and durable 600D polyester fabric but stands out for its giant, 4 x 10-inch wheels. Distributing weight more effectively allows the beach cart to function even on loose sand. The cart can carry up to 150 pounds on compact ground or 50 pounds on deep sand.

Use the extendable handle to reach your chosen picnic spot, then unpack your meal onto the folding flip table at the rear of the cart. The table includes two built-in cup holders. At the end of the day, the beach cart collapses so that the front wheels tuck in between the back wheels, giving it a slim profile that takes up minimal closet space. The cart comes with a carry case and is available in black or blue. Our product tester, Michelle Piccolo, said that her only complaint was that she "would have loved the table to be a bit longer to accommodate more snacks and drinks, but that's only if I'm being really picky."

"There is literally no setup necessary with this wagon," Piccolo also noted. "Once you remove it from the box, take off the cover, and push down to unfold the cart. When it's time to pack up, simply pull up on the tab in the middle of the wagon, and it folds back up easily."

Piccolo reported that the wagon held everything they needed: "two folding beach chairs, a large beach umbrella, towels, a bucket of beach toys, and our diaper bag, which we loaded up with snacks, drinks, and more." Piccolo also liked that the wagon had multiple areas to hold drinks. "I really do love this wagon. It's definitely a good investment if you hit the beach with any regularity," Piccolo concluded.

Other testers also enjoyed how easily the wagon could be set up and taken down. The only issue our other testers found was how the oversized wheels added weight (it's one of the heaviest tested) and made storage a bit more complicated.

What We Like
  • Super-lightweight and compact when stored

  • Added features make it ideal for many applications

What We Don't Like
  • Didn't perform as well on sand as on other terrain

This wagon from Gorilla Sports has many nifty features that make it a great all-purpose wagon for the beach, camping, running errands, or other activities you need to haul your loot. It's got upgraded steering and braking, compared to previous models. There are now expandable side pockets and four cupholders at each corner. And it folds into a very compact space.

Our testers loved the minimal setup of this wagon. They also enjoyed the material of the wagon, which they said has a "tactical quality to it, making it both sleek and a great quality." They enjoyed the brakes and their ability to handle uneven terrain. "This type of wagon has uses across all types of activities, not just for beach use," one tester concluded. "I actually use this type of wagon to cart my photography equipment to and from the car when traveling to various location sites. This wagon is great for such uses and many others."

What We Like
  • Great handle on all sorts of terrain

  • Mesh pockets on the sides amped organization

  • Great mobility and maneuverability

What We Don't Like
  • Some Amazon users reported wheels breaking easily

While most wagons on this list folded relatively easily, our testers thought this one stood out when folding and unfolding. Like many others on the list, the Timber Ridge Folding Beach Wagon is constructed of 600D polyester and an aluminum frame. The telescoping handle and large wheels help boost mobility and maneuverability.

Our testers loved how easily this wagon was ready to go, right out of the box. "You just expand it, and you're ready to fill it up and get moving," one tester noted. The wagon efficiently handled any terrain thrown at it. "It also had a huge area to fill and mesh pockets along the side that made it easier to store small items and water bottles," noted a tester.

Amazon

What We Like
  • Large wheels help handle multiple terrains

  • Very easy to use out of the box

  • Large area to hold items

What We Don't Like
  • Some users reported being frustrated by the fully circulating wheels

We put this as best for storage, because it folds to a small size. But the Portal Collapsible Utility Wagon does more than just fold compactly for storage. Some eight-inch wheels make it capable on multiple terrains. Fully rotational front wheels help maneuverability. And it boasts a large storage area with a burly construction. Two cupholders and a large carrying capacity make this a solid choice for any beach-goer.

"This wagon is ready to go right out of the box," one tester reported, noting how easily it unfolds and folds back up. Our testers were impressed by how much this wagon held and still rolled easily through sand and on gravel. "This wagon was very user-friendly and performed well," a tester concluded. "It also has a large area to store plenty of items and is a really versatile beach wagon that can be used in many applications."

Moon Lence Collapsible Outdoor Utility Wagon

Amazon

What We Like
  • Large capacity and small storage size

  • No assembly required

  • Maneuvered and moved through sand and gravel well

What We Don't Like
  • Smaller wheels

This high-capacity, but low-volume (when folded), wagon is ideal for families, groups, or someone with a lot of gear. The load capacity of 220 pounds is on the higher end of the wagons we tested, and our testers enjoyed the extra size. Our testers gave this wagon high marks for performance, thanks to some all-terrain wheels. "It was easy to pull through sand and gravel, and the handle made it easy to navigate," one tester noted.

While the carrying capacity is a boost, it does come with extra weight as this wagon was one of our heaviest tested at 31 pounds. Also, while the wheels are all-terrain, they are smaller than others tested. Our testers didn't report issues moving through deep sand, but Amazon customers did. "I think this is a great value," our tester concluded. "It was high quality, very convenient to use, and easy to transport—everything that makes a beach wagon great. This is best for anyone that needs to carry a lot of stuff to the beach and doesn't want a lot of fuss."

L.L.Bean Collapsible Wagon

4.8
L.L. Bean Collapsible Wagon

L.L. Bean

What We Like
  • Lots of pockets

  • Expandable handle

  • Wheels pivot well

What We Don't Like
  • Harder to collapse

If you're bringing little ones to the beach with you, the Collapsible Wagon from L.L.Bean is a great way to haul all their stuff. This full-sized wagon features a durable 600D polyester canopy from a steel frame. Measuring 39 x 21 x 26 when opened, this beach wagon can hold up to 150 pounds. One user even used it to transport four kids to the beach! Although it can hold hefty loads, it only weighs 30 pounds. This wagon also folds so it can be easily stowed away when not in use. Other bonuses include storage pockets on the side and back and an expandable pull handle.

"The wagon has a few fold-out pockets for smaller gear that flip over the sides when the wagon's open," product tester Suzie Dundas, said. "Three sides have large pockets for phones, keys, or anything else that may get lost in the main storage area. On the handle side are two side pockets for bottles with a clip between them to keep the handle secure when not in use."

Dundas said that while the folded position wasn't super-small, it was smaller than when not folded.

"Folded, it uses a 17-inch-by-10-inch footprint, which makes it small enough to store in a shed or corner of a closet," Dundas said. "You don't need any tools or skills to fold the cart; just push the corners toward the center, and it folds like an accordion. It was a bit stiff the first few times we folded it and required a bit of extra effort but loosened up after doing the process a few times."

Other Beach Wagons We Tested

We tested a total of 19 beach wagons. In addition to the 10 included above that we liked most, here are the others we tested:

Mac Sports Collapsible Outdoor Utility Wagon: Our testers really liked this wagon. Because of its included table, this wagon would be ideal if you include eating or a picnic in your beach trip and would like a surface connected to your beach wagon.

Mac Sports Heavy Duty Outdoor Folding Wagon: This is a solid and large beach wagon that was good but not great. It did everything we expected; our testers just weren't overly impressed by it. But if you're looking for a durable and sizable folding wagon, it's not a bad pick and has excellent Amazon reviews.

Mac Sports 2-in-1 Folding Beach Wagon and Chair: This unique option is a wagon that also folds into a lounge chair. It is not a bad choice if you're the efficient type.

Radio Flyer 3-in-1 Collapsible Wagon: Another option if you're looking to transport kids. This wagon has a canopy and three seating options, depending on the number of kids and style in which you'd like to haul them to and from the beach.

Gorilla Carts Steel Garden Cart: This cart was fine once assembled, but it took a lot to get assembled, even for a handy tester. Amazon customers love it, so if you're willing to get past the assembly learning curve, you'd probably be happy with it. Our testers just preferred the pre-assembled options on the list.

The Veer Cruiser: Consider this your sports car of beach wagons. It's costly but earned top performance ratings.

Rio Brands Beach Wonder Wheeler Deluxe Wagon: This wagon was another sound (but not great) option that sank in our ratings from some complicated assembly. It's got thousands of good Amazon reviews, so it is worth checking out. Our testers just couldn't get past the complex assembly.

My Beach Cart No Rust Foldable Trolly: This is a good option if you're looking for a trolly. There was a bit of an assembly learning curve, but it performed well enough once assembled.

Navatiee Collapsible Folding Wagon: An excellent option that our testers liked. It was easy to assemble and performed well across multiple terrains.

Product Selection

Products were selected using several different factors. First, we wanted to include products that would represent various price points, functions, and uses. We also wanted a variety of brands and styles of beach wagons. Research into what products had already been featured in other prominent publications was also a factor in deciding which beach wagons to test.

To help narrow down the list to less than two dozen, we only included products that already had stellar reviews. We also used the expertise of Dotdash Meredith editors and the testing team to identify products and brands known for having solid beach wagons.

Folding a beach wagon

TripSavvy / Kaya Abrahamson

How We Tested

Once we selected our products, we sent them to testers who lived on or near a beach. Testers were asked to rate the following attributes on a five-point scale: ease of use, performance, quality, and value.

When the testers received the beach wagons, we asked them to assemble the beach wagons using the instructions (if provided). Then the testers loaded the beach wagons with their beach essentials and pushed and pulled the wagons on pavement. We then asked the testers to take the loaded wagons to the beach and push and pull them on sand and gravel. Testers were also asked to make hard pivots and maneuvers with the wagons.

Testers were asked to use the wagons at least twice during a three-week period.

What to Look for in a Beach Wagon

Capacity

Think about your typical beach must-haves—like chairs, coolers, towels, and umbrellas—and make sure the wagon can haul it all with extra room for last-minute additions. Most beach wagons on this list can carry at least 100 pounds, though some can haul up to 300. Four-wheel models can typically carry more, while dolly-style wagons are better for lighter loads (and come with less storage space).

Maneuverability

You want a beach wagon with big, treaded wheels to help you navigate all types of sand. However, if you expect exceptionally rugged terrain, look for models with wheels that can rotate 360 degrees and have telescoping handles.

Storage size

Very few of us are fortunate enough to hit the beach 365 days a year, so you’ll want a wagon that can break down into a profile thin enough to stash in your closet or under your bed in the off-season. To travel more easily, look for models that not only are collapsable but also fold as flat and compact as possible so they can fit into your car. And for those traveling light, consider a beach cart over a wagon; these are often smaller, with just two wheels instead of a wagon’s four.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is the difference between a beach wagon and a beach cart?

Typically, beach carts are smaller than wagons. Whereas carts have a stand-up design with two wheels, beach wagons tend to be larger and sturdier, handle more weight and volume, and roll on four wheels.

  • How should you clean your beach wagon?

Some beach wagons allow you to separate the fabric from the frame to hose it down for easy cleaning. Scrub any areas of dirt with a wet cloth, or use a brush with some detergent for tougher stains. Hose down outdoors, and allow to air dry.

For a beach wagon with open-grid steel construction, the sand and any spills will pour out as you go, so the basket may never need cleaning beyond a simple hosing down.

  • Will a beach wagon’s wheels roll on the sand?

In the absence of a boardwalk or walking path to help get situated on the beach, it can prove challenging to wheel wagons on the sand. Make it easier by picking one with large treaded wheels that better maneuver on soft sand.
