Best Overall: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Agra
It’s not often a DoubleTree by Hilton tops a best hotels list, but the one in Agra is a standout property. With views of the Taj Mahal, the hotel actually skews on the luxurious side, but its rates are mid-range, making for an incredible value. Room types range from standard accommodations to one-bedroom suites, and there’s a penthouse for the most opulent stay. They’re also all well-appointed with modern furnishings in a neutral palette.
The best amenity at this hotel is arguably the infinity-edge pool, which overlooks the Taj Mahal, though the spa comes in at a close second. There’s also a 24-hour fitness center, a 24-hour business center, and nearly 6,000 square feet of space for meetings and events. Dining options at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Agra are varied: there’s an Indian specialty restaurant, a casual poolside lounge, a 24-hour food market, and a bar.
Best Boutique: The Grand Imperial
Despite its name, the Grand Imperial Hotel is not a sprawling complex, but an intimate 30-room property. Yet, as the only heritage hotel in Agra, it’s still grand. Built in the early 20th century, the Grand Imperial has hosted numerous royals from around the world over its century-long history. The hotel blends British colonial style with Mughal architecture across its public spaces, and both of its accommodation categories, Deluxe Rooms and Chamber of Prince Suites, are elaborately decorated with period furniture, including four-poster beds.
There’s also an outdoor pool with a historic gazebo, a full-service spa and fitness center, a restaurant serving Indian, Chinese, and European cuisine, and a bar. The concierge can easily help guests book guided tours of Agra’s top sites, including the Taj Mahal, which is just two miles away. Some of the best entertainment takes place right at the hotel, though, from Kathputli theater to live traditional music to folk dance performances.

Best for Luxury: The Oberoi Amarvilas
Oberoi is known for its luxury properties, but the Oberoi Amarvilas is by far the most extravagant hotel in the brand. Located less than half a mile from the Taj Mahal entrance gates, the hotel couldn’t have a better location. Plus, the front desk can set guests up with guides and whisk the group to the gates via golf carts. But the Oberoi Amarvilas is a destination unto itself, designed in the manner of a traditional palace, showcasing the best of Indian architecture and craftsmanship.
The rooms, which all come with 24-hour butler service, are filled with sumptuous materials like teak, silks, and marble, but the most impressive part of the accommodations are the views of the Taj Mahal. The property wows elsewhere, too — there’s a terraced pool area and an ornate spa that offers both Eastern- and Western-style treatments. There are two restaurants at Oberoi Amarvilas: Bellevue, which serves international cuisine all day long, and Esphahan, which serves a North Indian-inspired menu for dinner only.
Best for Families: Trident Agra
The Trident Agra is a 135-room luxury property just a mile from the Taj Mahal. Its low-slung buildings display modern takes on traditional Indian style, and they surround numerous gardens that have an oasis-like vibe. It’s not as ostentatious as some of the other five-star properties in the area, so it feels much more approachable — perfect for traveling families looking for a laid-back vacation. Service, however, is still top notch, from the kitchen staff at the restaurant (which serves Indian and European dishes), to the massage therapists at the small spa.
What makes Trident Agra particularly great for families is the stellar kids’ club, which has an outdoor playground with a splash area and offers painting, ceramics, and even cooking classes for older children. Accommodations range from garden- and pool-view rooms to one-bedroom suites with separate living areas and a dining room that seats four. All have air conditioning, free Wi-Fi for up to four devices, and flat-screen TVs.

Best for Couples: ITC Mughal Agra, A Luxury Collection Hotel
Given that the hotel is spread across 35 beautifully kept acres of gardens, it’s not hard to find some one-on-one time when you’re a guest here — even if there are 233 rooms. Though the hotel was only built in 1976, it feels much older, in part because the architecture reflects traditional Mughal style.
While the entry-level accommodations are spacious and well-appointed, upgrading to a Royal Mughal Suite not only gets you a personal butler, but also gets you a room in the separate Khwab Mahal (Palace of Dreams) wing. No matter which room you choose, romance can be found across the property, from the elaborate Kaya Kalp Spa to the elegant Bagh-E-Bahar Lounge to the exquisite swimming pool in the gardens. The most romantic spot, however, is atop the observation tower, from which you get a magnificent view of the the Taj Mahal.
Best for Nightlife: Taj Hotel & Convention Centre, Agra
While Agra isn’t known for its nightlife, you can still find a lively evening atmosphere at many of the hotels, most notably the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre, Agra. The 239-room hotel, which spans 4.5 acres of land, is just half a mile down the road from the Taj Mahal, and it has a collection of restaurants and bars that keeps its guests entertained.
Daawat-e-Nawab is the signature restaurant, serving a tasting menu and à la carte options, but the party is upstairs at the sky lounge, Infini — a rooftop hotspot with delicious cocktails, international cuisine, and a resident DJ. There’s also the Liquid Lounge Sports Bar, which provides a different flavor of nightlife. When the party ends, retreat to your sleek guest room for a good night’s sleep. And when you wake up, head to the spa or a lounger by the pool for ultimate relaxation.

Best for Business: Jaypee Palace Hotel & Convention Centre Agra
The Jaypee Palace Hotel & Convention Centre Agra is undoubtedly the top hotel for business travelers, given its 75,000 square feet of meeting space plus a business center. And with 341 guest rooms, there’s plenty of space for the whole group of execs coming to town. To house all these amenities and accommodations, the property is a massive 25 acres.
For downtime on your business trip, there are seven dining options to choose from, ranging from the Indian fine-dining Paatra to the Aqua Grill, which serves Indian barbecue. There’s also a beautiful wellness center that includes a spa, a salon, Turkish baths, and a gym. While Jaypee Palace Hotel is a contemporary property, it was designed to mimic a Mughal palace, so traditional touches abound. Rooms feature plenty of dark wood furnishings and sumptuous upholstery, adding to the traditional Indian palace vibe.
Best B&B: The Coral Court Homestay
Homestays are a popular accommodation type in Agra, and the best among them is the Coral Court Homestay, located less than half a mile from the Taj Mahal. The immaculate property is run by a husband-and-wife team who ensures an extremely convenient and comfortable stay. Each of the eight rooms is individually decorated with colorful textiles and a blend of new and old objects, artworks, and other ornamental items. All have private en-suite baths, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and some even have small private terraces.
Breakfast, which is included in the rate, is a highlight for many guests, as the kitchen staff prepares a vegetarian feast each morning. Dinner is served à la carte, but many guests recommend it for a delicious home-cooked meal. During your stay, don’t miss the rooftop terrace, which offers views of the Taj Mahal.
