The Barrett-Jackson Auction originated in 1971 when classic car enthusiasts Thomas Barrett and Russ Jackson held a sale in Scottsdale to reduce the size of their individual collections. Barrett's Mercedes 770 Phaeton sold for $153,000, a price that captured the attention of collectors worldwide.
This sale, and the event itself, thrust the Barrett-Jackson name into international prominence. Since then it has grown to become what many consider to be the premier event on the auction calendar.
