Ballston Quarter - Formerly Ballston Common Mall

All About the Newly Developed Town Center in Arlington, Virginia

Ballston Quarter is soon to become a walkable urban village in the area that was formerly known as Ballston-Common Mall in the heart of Arlington, Virginia. The shopping mall and its surrounding area are being transformed with new restaurants, shopping, nightlife, residences and offices buildings. The mall is open while redevelopment is taking place. Stores that are open include Macy’s, CVS, Lens Crafters, Sport & Health, Capital One Bank.  Entertainment options include a 12- screen movie theater, Regal Cinemas Ballston Common 12 and Kettler Capitals Iceplex  which offers many programs for recreational skaters, figure skaters, and hockey skaters.


Ballston's rapidly growing downtown will feature a cosmopolitan blend of commercial and residential centers with a variety of entertainment options. Plans include the construction of a new, luxury residential tower with 393 apartment units and 4 levels of underground parking. The redesign will include open-air and enclosed concourses, a market hall and a recessed public plaza. Completion is expected in fall 2018.

Ballston-Common Mall is located at the corner of Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard, just four miles from downtown Washington, D.C.

and two blocks from the Ballston Metro Station. The mall is accessible by Metrobus and Arlington Transit. The parking garage onsite is owned by Arlington County and managed by Standard Parking.

Development of Ballston Commons

Forest City, the owner/developer/manager of Arlington’s Ballston Common Mall, has begun a multi-faceted plan to redevelop the mall site into a more urban mixed-use center. The redevelopment plans will include updating the existing mall with an enhanced blend of restaurants, entertainment, and other contemporary upscale retail options including:

  • Creation of open-air retail concourses, as well as a multi-level main entrance plaza area as a community focal point
  • All-new street front facade design
  • Street life activation through creation of numerous exterior entrance store fronts, many with second level seating terraces
  • Remodeling/upgrading of interior retail concourses
  • Significant upgrading of retail mix to feature dining, entertainment, fitness, personal care & neighborhood support uses
  • 365,000 square feet of retail space on four levels

Ballston Quarter Residential Tower

Clark Construction will build a 455,000 square-foot, 22-floor, mixed-use building containing 406 residential units, 66,000 square feet of retail space, and four levels of below-grade parking. The building will feature a penthouse level, common spaces, and a rooftop pool. The new structure will be contiguous with the Ballston Common Mall.

Improvements to Ballston Metro Plaza

In response to the increase in visitation to the area, Arlington County has begun redevelopment improvements to the Ballston metro plaza. The redesign will increase traffic safety improving access and facilities including the addition of new modern bus shelters and seating, improved signage and expanded customer seating.
