If you want to see Singapore from a local's point of view, Balestier is a good place to start - its budget hotels offer visitors cheap accommodations in a district known for its HDBs, conserved shophouses, and its authentic local food. (Read about Singapore's hawker centers.)

The nearby Goh Chor Tua Pek Kong Temple hearkens back to the days when tigers used to roam freely in this once-swampy land - the temple was intended as a supplication to the deity Tua Pek Kong for his protection against the rapacious beasts. Other interesting local sites include the Sasanaramsi Burmese Temple and the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall.

If you need transportation to the rest of Singapore, there's no need to fear: bus stations up and down Balestier Road allow easy access to Orchard Road, City Hall, Chinatown, and Bugis/Kampong Glam.

MRT stations are a bit of a hike from the area; Toa Payoh (NS19) and Novena (NS20) Stations, both on the North-South line, are closest to the district. Get an EZ-Link Card for easy travel on both bus and MRT throughout the island.

To call the Ibis a “budget” hotel is stretching it – the Ibis experience has been all about the bang-for-the-buck, with three- to four-star accommodations at two- to three-star prices.

The Ibis' 241 guestrooms may be compact, but guests get microfiber pillows and a fluffy white duvet on their queen-size beds; free WiFi in the rooms; complimentary use of a smartphone; and complimentary local and international calls on the room phone to a few select countries. Your stay comes with a buffet breakfast at the Oopen Pasta Lounge downstairs.

The central Balestier location places guests right next to the Zhongshan Mall and right in front of a bus stop. If you want to ride the local MRT trains, take advantage of the Ibis's free shuttle service to the Novena MRT station.
