The Azamara Journey is a 694-passenger ship owned by Azamara Club Cruises, which in turn is owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. This premium cruise line owns two of the eight "R" class ships built by Renaissance Cruises--the Azamara Journey and the Azamara Quest, which are identical. These mid-sized ships are very popular with cruise travelers who enjoy the size, which is large enough to have balcony cabins and more dining options, but small enough to have an intimate ambiance and the opportunity for staff to provide more personal service.
The Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest fit Azamara Club Cruises' destination-oriented itineraries perfectly. They can visit off-the-beaten path destinations, but still provide their guests an elegant, premium cruise experience that includes all gratuities and complimentary wine at lunch and dinner, features usually only found on luxury ships.
Where did the name Azamara come from? What does it mean? See below the picture for the answer.
Azamara is a coined term derived from the Romance languages. Those of us who took Latin in high school will recognize blue (az) and the sea (mar). The name was also inspired by a star, Acamar. In Classical times, the star Acamar was the most southern bright star that could be seen from the latitude of Greece.
Fascinating story, isn't it? Now you can impress your dinner companions on your Azamara cruise.
Let's take a photo tour of the Azamara Journey.

Azamara Journey - Prime C Bar
The small bar at the entrance to the Prime specialty restaurant is the coziest bar on the Azamara Journey. I thought it had the best Cosmos on the ship.
Azamara Journey - Discoveries Lounge
The Azamara Discoveries Lounge is on deck 5 next to the Discoveries Restaurant. It has the feel of an English country house, complete with (faux) fireplace.

The Cabaret Lounge is the largest entertainment venue on the Azamara Journey. It features cabaret-style singers, musicians, and entertainers.
Azamara Journey - Library/Drawing Room
When Renaissance owned the "R" class ships, everyone raved about how gorgeous the library was. I was happy to see that Azamara had not changed anything except the name. It's now called the Drawing Room.
Azamara Journey - Drawing Room
The Azamara Journey Drawing Room on deck 10 is one of the loveliest libraries at sea.

Azamara Journey - Caribbean Entertainment
The Azamara Journey had two buffet dinners outside on the pool deck on our 12-night cruise--one with Caribbean dishes and the other with an international theme.
Although ships have to anchor and use tenders, the Azamara Journey is small enough to include off the beaten path ports in its itineraries.
Azamara Journey - eConnections Computer Room
This large computer room is used for email and for computer classes. The Azamara Journey Wifi works throughout the ship for those with their own computers.
Azamara Journey - Astral Spa
The Astral Spa is forward on deck 9 and is a full-service spa, fitness center, and salon. It also has a thalassotherapy pool.

Azamara Journey - Cooking Demonstration
The chefs did three culinary demonstrations on the Azamara Journey--one on making sushi and nigiri, the second on preparing a scallop appetizer from Aqualina, and the third on using marzipan to decorate cakes and other culinary delights. Just listening to how to make rice for sushi convinced me to continue to eat it out rather than try and make it at home!
Azamara Journey Veranda Cabin
The Azamara Journey Club Veranda cabins have all the amenities cruise travelers expect and enjoy.
Azamara Journey - Galley Tour
Even those who don't like to cook will enjoy a tour of a ship's galley. Along with hundreds of other guests, we enjoyed many delicious meals from this kitchen.

This panel in the engine control room is so sensitive that it alerts the officers when someone is smoking in their cabin!
