School starts back in August, but that doesn't mean summer in Orlando is over! The month is full of fun charity events and evening theme park shows, so schedule in some R&R between back-to-school shopping trips.

    The afternoon rains start easing up right around the time school starts back, but the heat continues throughout the month of August. The average high for the month exceeds 90 degrees, with average lows in the mid-70s.

    Orlando Main Street Restaurant Week

    The Orlando Main Street Program has organized Orlando Main Street Restaurant Week, which takes place in early August. The event aims to promote food service businesses that are members of their location's Main Street district.

    This annual fundraiser at Brunswick Wekiva Lanes in Apopka benefits Special Olympics Florida and the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. Special Olympics Florida helps provide year-round training and competition to those with intellectual disabilities. The Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando promotes animal welfare.

    Generation Nature LIVE at SeaWorld

    The new summer show, hosted by SeaWorld Orlando's experts in animal care and rescue, aims to connect park guests with rescued animals while teaching the importance of wildlife and habitat conservation.

    While it's nice to put the past school year out of our heads for a while, we need to keep next year's school start date in mind to ensure we can fit in vacations, checkups, back-to-school shopping, and other summer stuff before the new year begins. Orange County schools generally begin mid to late August.

    Frozen Summer at Disney's Hollywood Studios

    Head to Disney's Hollywood Studios this summer to cool off with interactive and fun "Frozen" experiences for people of all ages. Park guests can join Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff for a daily character procession, ice skating, nightly dance party, "Frozen" fireworks show, sing-alongs based on the movie.

    Annual Orlando Taste of the Nation

    Celebrate the culinary masterpieces of local chefs and restaurants while benefiting the fight against childhood hunger. Local beneficiaries include Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida.

    Run or walk the 3.1-mile course through downtown's outer neighborhoods and receive prizes and other incentives. The Celebration of Running 5k is part of Track Shack's month-long anniversary celebration and is presented by Florida Hospital and held at the Orlando Science Center.

    Held at Orlando Watersports Complex, the Nautique Wake Open features a large contingent of some of the best professional wakeboarders and wakeskaters in the world, as well as many top amateurs. The competition lasts for four days and is presented by Rockstar Energy Drink.

    Summer/BBQ for the Community

    Held annually to support local children in need of school supplies, the Summer BBQ for the Community takes place at Grand Avenue School in Orlando. Attendees will enjoy food and drinks and receive a free book bag. Call 407-860-3021 for more information.

    Located at the Cocoa Civic Center in Brevard County, this annual fundraising gala benefits the Central Brevard Humane Society to support the organization's no-kill shelter facility. Guests will enjoy star performances, a buffet dinner, music, and live & silent auctions.

    Enjoy a gourmet dinner, silent and live auctions, dancing, games and celebrity appearances and entertainment at the annual Diamonds & Denim Gala at Disney's Contemporary Resort. The event benefits the Beta Center's family strengthening and child abuse prevention services.
