As New Zealand's largest city, Auckland provides a great range of options for the avid shopper. Because of the city's geography, there are several distinct shopping areas, each of which has a different character and things to offer. Most are a short taxi or bus ride from the center of the city.

Queen Street and the Central City

Queen Street starts from Auckland Harbour (known as Downtown) and runs for nearly three kilometers in a virtual straight line. As the commercial as well as the shopping hub of Auckland, there is a full range of shopping options. The souvenir shops are mainly concentrated at the harbor end, and there are a number of arcades and side streets with boutique stores and eateries.

Smith and Caughey, Auckland's premier department store, is located about a third of the way along Queen Street from the harbor end.

Parnell was originally a working-class area, but the foresight of developer Les Harvey in the 1970s saw Parnell turned into one of Auckland's most fashionable areas. Be sure to visit Parnell Village, an interesting collection of quaint shops near the top end of Parnell Road.

Almost adjacent to Parnell, Newmarket caters to the wealthy residents of Auckland's eastern suburbs. The main street, Broadway, includes well-known fashion stores. The streets behind are great for exploring; look out especially for the well-stocked Asian groceries.

Newmarket is also just a short train ride from central Auckland's Britomart Station (located at the bottom of Queen Street).

Ponsonby Road

Ponsonby Road sits on a ridge not far from central Auckland and has become something of a trendy nightlife area in recent years. A major appeal for daytime shoppers is the number of internationally known and emerging New Zealand fashion labels that have stores here. These include Juliette Hogan, Karen Walker, Minnie Cooper, Robyn Mathieson, and Yvonne Bennetti.

There are also some quirky daytime cafes, catering for the locals. One not to miss is One 2 One Cafe with a cozy courtyard and some of the best coffee in town.

Further Afield

Shopping malls well serve Auckland suburbs, most of them owned by the Westfield group. You'll find other interesting shops in Takapuna and Devonport (both on the North Shore), Mount Eden and Remuera.
