We're back with our series Inside Atlanta – each week, we sit down with influential locals to talk about what Atlanta means to them. Today we’re chatting with Lauri Strauss, the president of the Atlanta Press Club, one of the largest professional journalism associations in the country. Strauss has been president for over 10 years, overseeing the organization’s day-to-day operations and coordinating luncheons and presentations that have included big-name guests like Tom Brokaw and Janet Napolitano.
When she’s not working, you can find her out and about in Atlanta volunteering with organizations like Agape Youth and Family Center and the Junior League of Atlanta. Today we get a tour of The Big Peach led by Strauss herself.
I live in… “Smyrna. I love the easy access to downtown, midtown, and Buckhead, as well as the great restaurants and shopping in the area.”
I wish people knew… “Atlanta is a great city for journalists. As president of the Atlanta Press Club, I am proud of all the programs we offer to help journalists stay relevant, discuss issues that impact the industry and network with other journalists.”
Clock strikes 5’oclock, I’m drinking… “a glass of wine preferably on a patio. Some of my favorite patios include Anis Bistro, Portofino, and King + Duke”
If I had to stay in a hotel, I’d check into… “the InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta. The Atlanta Press Club hosts some its largest fundraisers there, and the hotel staff always gives their guests the VIP treatment.”
Atlanta’s best-kept secret is … “Smyrna Food Truck Tuesdays. Good food, good music and a great park to people watch and relax with friends.”
When I’m playing tourist I go to… “the Georgia Aquarium. I especially enjoy the penguin encounter.”
I get my sweat on… “at World Gym in Smyrna, or on the weekends you’ll find me running on the Silver Comet Trail or one the many other trails throughout Cobb County.”
I love spending my money… “supporting my favorite charities, including Agape Youth and Family Center, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta or the Junior League of Atlanta.”
