We're back with our series Inside Atlanta—each week, we sit down with influential locals to talk about what Atlanta means to them. Today we’re chatting with Mary Pat Matheson, President and CEO of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Matheson moved to Atlanta in 2003 to be at the helm of the city’s Garden. Since then, the Atlanta Botanical Garden has become a go-to destination for visitors and locals alike.
She also oversees the garden’s preservation work as they take on endangered plants and help them thrive in the wild. Don’t miss the Chihuly in the Garden exhibition featuring 19 colorful glass sculpture installations throughout the campus.
Today we get a tour of The Big Peach lead by Matheson herself.
I live in… “South Buckhead, about five minutes from the garden. I love living in the City — so many restaurants to walk to, a beautiful trail to walk with the dogs, and Midtown is right there, a vibrant part of our city.”
I Wish People Knew… “How incredible it is to walk on the Garden’s Canopy Walk when the birds are singing and the trees are so green and gorgeous.”
You Can Find Me… “At the Garden, of course! It’s my favorite place in the world.”
I love the price points and the liveliness there. Another favorite is Lure, because I love seafood and Crescent Avenue.”
Clock strikes 5 o’clock, I’m drinking… “A gin and tonic or a Cosmopolitan. I like sharing cocktails at the Four Seasons for those really special occasions.”
If I Had to Stay in a Hotel, I’d check into… “The Four Seasons!
Aside from it being a gorgeous hotel, it’s in a great location within walking distance to many of our city’s best attractions and restaurants.”
Atlanta’s Best Kept Secret Is… “The Lagerquist Gallery in Miami Circle. It’s filled with beautiful works of art from more than 45 artists who each focus on different genres and media.”
I Get My Sweat On… “The Tanyard Creek trail—it’s where I go to exercise, escape and just enjoy nature in the city.”
I Love Spending My Money At... “Sonja Says in Athens since we have a farm nearby. It’s a fabulous boutique with beautiful, creative clothes.”
