For many people, fall means that it's apple picking season in North Carolina. Whether you're picking a batch of apple pies, making homemade applesauce or apple butter, or just as a healthy snack, there's nothing like a basket of fresh apples from the Carolinas.

If you're looking to get the absolute freshest apples possible, you're in luck in North Carolina because there are plenty of farms and orchards that let you pick your own straight from the tree.

Apple picking season is usually sometime from early June to early December, so start checking towards the middle to end of May to see out when your favorite farm is opening. Almost all of the farms on this list are going to be in the North Carolina mountains area.

I've listed just a few apple picking farms below. The list is broken down into Western North Carolina, the North Carolina coastal region, and the Charlotte area - the Piedmont or central region. For each area, about six farms are listed, with a link to a complete database to find more. What you'll find listed on this page is nowhere near a comprehensive list, nor am I saying that these are the "best" ones. It's just a sampling of some of what we have to offer. I did try to include farms from different areas of each region.

Most of these sites do offer other fresh fruits and vegetables, and several even have other "pick your own" foods. But for each of these spots, you can pick your own strawberries.
