Fall is a fun time for foodies in the St. Louis area. Local restaurants show off their best dishes at the annual Taste of St. Louis in September. Another popular food-themed event is Apple Fest at Eckert's Orchards in the Metro East.

When and Where

Apple Fest is held weekends in September. In 2016, Eckert's in Belleville hosts Apple Fest each weekend from September 3-25. The festival runs each Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, but there is a fee for some festival activities.

Eckert's has three locations in the Metro East. The Belleville and Millstadt locations are about 30 minutes from downtown St. Louis. The Grafton farm is about an hour north of St. Louis. For specific directions to each location, see the Eckert's website.

What to See and Do

Apple Fest is a great way to enjoy the harvest of fall. You can tempt your taste buds with apple pies, fritters, cakes, cookies and other sweets. The festival also features other popular fall foods like caramel apples, sweet corn and funnel cakes. In addition to all the apples, there's live entertainment, wagon rides, pony rides and other special activities for kids.

And don't miss the chance to pick-your-own apples. Take a ride to middle of the orchard and fill up your bags with fruit from the trees. Eckert's grows a wide variety of apples including Honeycrisp, Gala, Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious and Granny Smith, so there are apples for all tastes. Some varieties are ready for picking as early as mid-August. Others don't ripen until October. For the latest on which fruits are in season right now, check out the Eckert's crop update.

Other Events at Eckert's

If you can't make it for Apple Fest this year, there are plenty of other events at Eckert's worth checking out. The Belleville location is a popular destination for both pumpkins and Christmas trees. There are also fun events throughout the year like the Haunted Hayrides in October, Breakfast with Santa in December, the Wine & Food Festival in March and Free Summer Concerts from May to August.

More Fall Fun

Eckert's Apple Fest is just one of the many ways to welcome fall in the St. Louis area. You can wander through a seven acre corn maze at the Great Godfrey Maze.
