Loading Vehicles on Amtrak Train

Types of vehicles permitted on the Auto Train include cars, vans, SUVs, motorcycles, small boats, jet-skis and some other recreational vehicles. Reservations are required.
Tips: Make sure you have a clear understanding about your required check-in time and allow plenty of time to arrive early. Check-in times vary depending on the type of vehicle you have.
Obtain your ticket ahead of time if possible and remember to take everything you will need from your vehicle before check-in as you will not be able to return to your vehicle throughout the trip.

The are two Amtrak Auto Train stations, one in Lorton, Virginia, which is located outside of Washington, D.C., and another in Sanford, Florida (pictured above), which is near Orlando, Florida.
Tip: After checking-in your car, you will board the train. You must obtain your tickets before boarding the train and you must have a valid photo ID. Pack a small carry-on bag for your overnight on the train.

The Dining Car

The Amtrak Auto Train Dining Car

Breakfast and Dinner are included in the price of your ticket. You will be assigned a dining time for dinner at check-in.
Tip: If you wish, you are permitted to take your own food and beverages on board, however, remember that carry-on bags are limited to two per passenger and that space on the train is compact.

Deluxe Sleeper Interior

Accommodations and corresponding price levels range from coach seats to bedroom suites. Pictured above is a Deluxe Sleeper Compartment.
Tip: Many frequent Auto Train travelers prefer to carry on their own comfortable pillows and small blankets, especially when traveling in coach.

According to Amtrak, the boarding platform at the Lorton, Virginia Amtrak Auto Train station is 1,480 feet long, which is longer than the height of Chicago's Sears Tower.
Tip: Whether arriving in Florida or Virginia, consider that waiting time to retrieve your vehicle can take anywhere from about 20 minutes to well over an hour. Make sure that you allow ample time in your destination itinerary for a possible delay.
