Whether you are strictly vegan or are a vegetarian, there are local Albuquerque restaurants that cater to your dietary needs or ones that are at least vegetarian-friendly. This list is by no means comprehensive, but it will get you started. It's also good to remember that Indian and Asian restaurants are always a workable option.
El Patio is a university neighborhood classic. Their New Mexican-inspired menu has a number of vegetarian dishes such as spinach enchiladas and avocado burritos. Vegans can request dishes without cheese and rest assured that the beans and sauces are not cooked with lard.
Although Annapurna's touts itself as a vegetarian cafe, there are quite a few vegan options as well. This popular eatery now has two Albuquerque locations and one in Santa Fe. Its emphasis is on ayurvedic cooking, and there are a variety of gluten free menu items.
Farina Alto Restaurant offers a variety of vegetarian options. About half of the pizzas can be made vegan by using Daiya non-dairy cheese.
Flying Star has a variety of salads and each day they feature a vegetarian soup. There is a commitment to providing vegan options, and they also have gluten free dishes. Try their Mediterranean Nosh, a hummus plate which is simply delish. And don't forget to save room for desserts -- their sweet offerings are a definite plus. Their Satellite Coffee locations offer some sandwiches and salads which are veg friendly as well. (Tip: Try the Rabbit Wrap!).
The Guava Tree Cafe in Nob Hill offers Caribbean and South American cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. Their Arepa Machilla (a small version of puffy dough cake-like tortillas) contains black beans, sweet plantains, roasted veggies and fresco cheese, and their La del Gata contains avocado, sweet plantains, sweet peppers, and cheese. Get either dish without cheese to make it vegan.
In addition to their great coffee and teas, you will find tasty granolas, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, salads, pastries and a good selection of vegetarian options at Java Joe's. For a vegan option, try their wraps or black bean burrito (minus the cheese) or one of their salads. Their vegan veggie tomato soup is a daily staple.
You'll be amazed at all the options at this vegan food haven, and how good everything tastes, from the salads to the house specialties. Mix it up with just appetizers and noodles, or get a combination plate if you've got a large appetite. No matter what you've got a taste for, you can't go wrong with this jewel of a restaurant.
Tomato Cafe is a buffet style restaurant with plenty of vegetarian options. For vegans, the posole is always good and they'll do a vegan pizza on request.
